Does the new K1 have OVF AF face detection?

Hi all. This question may take awhile to be answered ans the K1 is reviewed, but will the OVF AF allow automatic face detection a'la the Nikon D750 and up cameras? We are considering starting up the wedding business again and this feature makes it much easier to shoot quickly. The D750 we rented was just super at nailing the brides face everytime. We may not do the wedding thing again, in which case the K1 not having this feature will not be a deal breaker. BTW, the feature is supposed to be available in the Canon 5DS series but almost never worked when we rented one. I do hear the Sony A7RII is really good at this also, but we need dual card slots and a long lasting battery, so that one is a no-go and we would prefer to stay with Pentax if possible. So, what say you all??

Live view example starting @2:00, and I'm expecting to have the same functionality through transparent LCD in OVF but no examples yet.

I don't believe so. Pentax face detection only works in live view.

According to D750 manual pages 57-59, face detection only works in Live View and can be used in both AF-S and AF-F. Same with Pentax.

What is the function of transparent LCD in OVF?
For crop mode only?

Actually the OVF face detection AF is described under 3d tracking on page 152 in the manual on the Nikon D750, and I know from personal use that it works very well. So no such thing for the K1 then?

You mean that face detection is handled by the AE sensor rather than PDAF sensor matrix?

I would guess that is the case, seems funny that Pentax does not do this as they really kicked up the pixel count of the AE sensor starting in the K3 series.

I don't know if Pentax does do this or not with the K-1. The users manual isn't publicly available yet. So, for you, no knowing equals the K-1 does not have this feature. You make a lot of short cuts. If you already have a D750 (decent full frame camera) , why would you get a Pentax full frame then?

It's just a better way of displaying the AF points, plus it can shown a grid, electronic level, and crop area when desired.

Yes. It's been that way for a while with Nikon, even with AE sensors of smaller capability than the 91k metering sensor on the D4S/D800/D810/750. Pic related, for the D800, showing face detection being done by the AE sensor (for OVF), as well as by the image sensor (for EVF).

With Pentax, since the K-3 arrived with it's 86k metering sensor, the camera EXIF has been showing face detection results using the OVF, but face detection has never been turned 'on' by the firmware for use in OVF focussing, unfortunately. It works fine in LiveView, of course, but not OVF. IMHO, if the hardware is able to support OVF face detection in Pentax, they should enable it.

Many people on these forums have criticised optical viewfinder face detection assisted AF as un-necessary and a gimmick, and hence not worthy of inclusion in any serious Pentax like the K-1, but it is genuinely useful in real-world [and pro] use. I wish Pentax would make it work in the K-1.

very frustrating almost but not quite?

PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System
Optimizing the performance of AE and AF systems and the ease of image composition
Supported by the approximately 86,000-pixel RGB light-metering sensor and the new PRIME IV imaging engine, the PENTAX Real-time Scene Analysis System analyzes such factors as brightness distribution in the image field, the subjectís primary color and its motion with great accuracy and efficiency. In addition, by adopting a breakthrough artificial intelligence technology called deep learning to its image detection algorithm*, this system assesses each individual scene more accurately, while optimizing the accuracy and performance of the light-metering, exposure-control and autofocus systems, and selecting the most appropriate finishing touch for a given scene or composition.
*This RICOH-original technology is available during viewfinder shooting when the exposure mode is set to Scene Analyze Auto and the Custom Image mode is set to Auto Select.
