K-1 live

The biggest annual photo exhibition in Finland started today in Helsinki. They had the K-1 on display!
It was not possible to take pictures with me, but did spend quite a while fiddling with it!

My initial impression is very good, a very solid construction indeed! Build quality is very similar to previous flagship bodies. The camera is somewhat bigger than the K-3, but not that much really. I found it very easy to handle.
Shutter noise has been raised in some discussions. I tested it at various shutter speeds. It may be slightly louder than the K-3, but the difference is marginal. Definitely not an issue!
The viewfinder is larger than the ones in previous crop bodies. The grid in the viewfinder can be switched off. Another novel feature is the illuminated controls, which certainly comes in handy when shooting or changing lenses in low light. Despite the changes the controls and menus appeared very familiar for an accustomed Pentax user.
Tried it with various lenses including a couple of primes and the new 24-70/2,8. Hard to say anything decisive, but in a dimly lit hall AF was decisive and pretty fast. And quiet, none of the lenses had screwdrive-AF. The grip is a bit larger (deeper) than earlier, but the design appears very similar to its predecessors.
I definitely liked what I saw! I have pre-ordered, but will probably have to wait another month or so to get mine.
Last year they had an early example of the DFA70-200/2,8 in the same exhibition. The lens was postponed a couple of weeks after the exhibition. I sure hope we won´t see anything like that this time!

Lucky you. I'm jealous.

Thanks for the hands-on report. Good to hear about the subdued shutter, and the good handling of the camera.

It's weird, but every time I see a K-1, the rear-LCD seems larger than the K-3 LCD screen, even though the dimensions (3.2 inch diagonal) are identical.

Because the K1 is so compact?
It is proportionally bigger than other FF camera screens?
Or the frame around the screen is big?

It does give that impression also in real life. The screen sticks out a little, and maybe the frame around it makes it look larger.

Makes sense. It's a nice difference.

I much prefer the interface on the K-1 looking at the comparison there...

One question, a minor one but just the same if anyone knows:

Is there a eye cup option for the K-1? I am thinking with the screen sticking out, it might interfere with some of the cup types?

I have never warmed up to the rubber blob square eye reliefs on modern camera's, and usually seek out a true "eye cup" and install it, like I put on my K5, I currently have a collapsible one.

I really like the increased contrast of the viewfinder without stray light coming in from behind.

Thanks,
Eric

The K-1 uses a new eye-cup (Eyecup FT) compared to the K-3/K-3 II (Eyecup FS). However I think it is likely that many Pentax-compatible eyecups and eye-cup accessories (like the O-ME 53 magnifying eyepiece and similar) will fit the K-1 without getting in the way of the flippy screen, provided they don't hang below the eyepiece too much.
