Some people said the same about 32 MB cards 15 years ago. Why don't they stick to their safety strategy any more, even if we don't have 1000x more megapixels now? Its because they have misunderstood all the time. Large cards increase safety, if they are backed up as often as with smaller cards. Its because the card acts as an extra copy of a larger number of files. And the risc of loosing a card is much lower when its in the camera all the time compared to having many cards floating around in different pockets and drawers.
The issue is not as clear-cut as you picture it.

Someone steals your camera, good bye redundancy, and it's worse than having multiple cards.
When I'm abroad I shoot on various sd cards, keep them in a pouch that I leave in the hotel room's safe, and backup regularly on an Android device.

If a card fails, and it's a big card, you have the same degree of reliability as with many different cards (actually, only if you did remember/had the time to backup properly, otherwise it's worse), except that you sustain a larger economical loss due to the loss of q much more expensive card.
Price per GB differences become almost negligible after a certain size, and if anything work against you for the absolute maximum capacity cards.

the 32MB example is obviously ludicrous at the present time (context dos enter the equation), I'd say that, depending on the camera, 500 pics per card should be a reasonable value. A 32GB card should be able to cope with ease even with the K1, if my math is right.

In Australia it is really difficult to buy a 128GB card anyway. A 32GB not so much. It goes like this......

..... Ive got $30 spare.... might as well get a 32GB ScanDisk Extreme....ok, got it.

or

......I've got $120 spare .... might as well buy a 128kb..... oh, wait..... theres a SMC K50/1.4 for $100 on eBay...lens wins every time. Same reason I haven't been able to buy a backup device yet as well. There should be a rule for SD cards, they should be much cheaper then anything else you want.

Do it now before something horrific happens. In fact, buy two.

Wanted a few things as upgrades to my whole system so along with the K1. I also ordered a AF-540FGZ II flash since the K1 doesn't have an on board flash and the AF-540FGZ1II was offered on B&H for about half price. Also got an extra battery and two SanDisk 64GB EXTREME PRO SDXC-UHS-1 (95MB/S) and a Sigma 17-35 aspherical lens for the Kit lens. Total cost around $2500.00.

Go big or go home, LOL!

I like mine, and I think you'll like yours. I cheerfully admit to not having mastered it yet - I seem to get better results casually when shooting with my AF200Sa thyristor flash - but when I get it right, it's really great (and the AF200Sa does not do bounce).

Obviously not a married man. The correct answer is that there are no on-costs and significant financial benefits to upgrading to a FF.

My Mac is backed up, important shots (weddings etc) then just onto second SD card untill home...... so I guess I have a "Dynamic Risk Mitigation Backup Methodolgy Proportionate to ...."

anyway, it's mostly on OS holidays when all your SD cards are getting used and there's no internet. This is normally only once a year now for me. Then I mght selectvely save some shots onto a second card..... or Ipad.

I've got the lenses I need so the only thing extra would be a couple of large SD-cards.

You will be perfectly fine with it. Upgrade only if you need weather resistance. I miss the white reflector card on the old 540 that was built-in. the new 540 ofcourse has better recycle times but no external battery pack option. Most people will just be fine with their older 540s I am thinking.

K-1 will be 'critical mass' as far as a new computer goes.

Pre-ordered my K-1 today, will get the battery grip as well, maybe the 15-30, would like to know exactly what the ultra wide prime is though, before I commit on that.

My 2008 iMac has slowed down quite a lot with the last couple of OS upgrades.......so I'm going to try to take it back to Mountain Lion (I think) or the oldest one that Lightroom and DXO will run on to see if that speeds it up (its maxed on ram and has a SSD).
