What can I do with the wifi?

I have no idea of how the K-1 wifi function will work.

So, will it show up on my local net and behave like a remote disk, allowing me to copy the pictures and clear the memorycard? Or do I still have to connect a usb cable or use a card reader?

The manual is available a couple of places online. WiFi usage is described on page 88 of the English version. The short answer is that, no, your camera will not negotiate an auto-mount of its card as a network drive to computers on your network.* You will need an app in the same manner as on the K-S2.

This is why I love to tether to my laptop via EyeFi card.

At least in they K-3, the wifi card creates its own network. You can join that network with your computer or devices, and then transfer jpegs or do remote capture. It is pretty clunky, so hopefully the K-1 is fine tuned!

Clunky is right. It times out all the time, forcing me to restart the browser or reconnect my device, takes ages to load an image and the user interface is not great. I use it in emergencies but I'd use it a lot more if it they improved it a bit.

K3 is flucard or eyefi only no built in wifi. The Ks2 should be closer.

So I can download the pictures to my phone?
Unfortunately that is not where I usually store my pictures. Ah well, maybe next time the wifi will actually connect to another network.

It is to be hoped that an app will become available to use wifi from a laptop and not just iOS or android. That sounds more useful for studio work.

Don't know about the upcoming K-1 but can share my experience with my pocket camera, Canon S120. It is probably very similar. I load Canon's Camera Connect app on my phone. Then I open my phone's wifi hot spot. On the camera I hit the wifi button. The camera's wifi then finds my phone through the app (launch the app) and I can load whatever photos I want from the camera to the phone. Then I can send the photos by text or email or upload to FB or Flickr. Works for video too but with size limitations. Sounds more complicated than it is. Once you figure out how to do it once or twice it's really simple.

It looks like the K-1 will have live tethering as well which is very exciting.

With Pentax I think the phone connects to the camera.

Sony seems to have the richest camera WiFi implementation. Sony WiFi-capable cameras like the A5000/A6000 etc actually run apps that can do a variety of networking and imaging tasks you can download and install into the camera.

Having said that, there don't seem to be many cameras that offer WiFi that allow the device to simply operate as a network-enabled remote drive under Windows. Even the WiFi enabled Sonys don't offer that, for example.

Panasonic offers pretty strong Wifi options including the ability to send them as they are made or batch transfer them later. This does not require special software on the laptop but it complex.

I like the idea of remote capture and will use it sometimes (hello much bigger LCD), but hard to imagine wanting to wait around for a K-1 DNG to transfer to my phone to edit it... Maybe it will be fast enough but doubt it.. At least for small jpeg transfers it'll be fine so might go for that sometimes... Would never try to transfer files to computer using it...
