Warranty / protection plan

I'm sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, I have looked around a bit and haven't been able to find anything.

I'm looking into getting the K-1, I'm in the US, and it seems like there are a number of places to choose from when ordering. I was wondering if it mattered in terms of warranties and or protection plan. I wanted to get some sort of extended plan, and I've never done that before. Amazon sells a 3rd party protection plan, which I'll link below, but I know nothing about it, and would like to hear opinions on it.

Basically my question is, is it worth it to buy additional protection, and if so, where and what should I buy (specifically for the K-1)

Also, I wasn't sure the best forum to put this in, so sorry if this isn't the best place

Thanks for the help!

For some time the best deal going was the Pentax extended warranty for $20 which gave you a total of three years. However, the price has gone up significantly on that recently so it may not be the best option anymore.

The 3-year USA warranty from Pentax for the K-1 is $110, and this entitles you to a free inspection/cleaning during the warranty period. $55 a year for peace of mind on a $1799 camera is a small price to pay, IMO.

Alternatively, you could opt for a third-party warranty (square trade, mack, leaf, etc.) such as the one you've linked above. I haven't had any experience with smart guard, but based on the Amazon reviews they certainly have some issues, and they do not seem to cover damage due to water ingress. Square trade gets much better reviews. Here's their 4-year service plan:

Amazon.com : SquareTrade 4-Year Camera Protection Plan ($1750 - 2000) : Consumer Electronics Warranties : Camera & Photo

You can also get drops/spills coverage at a higher price.
