Could anyone here test some other HSM lens for compatibility issues???
The 8-16/4.5-5.6 is a HSM lens, and it is compatible.

(For sake of completeness, that's "8 18" in exiftool's parlance)

Another non-screwdriven lens is the 70-300/4-5.6 DG OS. It's not a HSM lens, but it uses the "power contacts" introduced with the K10D and uses some kind of motor for focusing.
Besides it's an OIS Lens.
(Exiftool "8 12")

That lens is also compatible, even with it's rather whiny OIS. I have to mention that I've had a rather strange phenomen with my K-1 yesterday, when I took some test shots.
Don't know if it's related to the lens or a general fluke in the camera's firmware, so I'm not pointing fingers into any direction at all.

What happened was that the camera (when using the OVF) didn't turn on the backside display when using the four-way switches for WB etc. Using the INFO button turned the display on as did the MENU button, and of course LV - which I then had to use to change WB settings. Turning the camera off and on again did "cure" the problem, so it's surely nothing systematic.

Here are two samples I took with these lenses (not using the OIS with the 70-300):

On the Krusenshtern I've pushed the shadows, no further processing. The other one shows what happens when using an APS-C lens on a FF body. And it shows an "old friend" of firmware incompatibilties - when the focal length is below 10mm, it's not written in the usual EXIF field. Same happens on the K-5.

SIGMA lenses that are working with K-1

I have tested my three Sigma lenses, the 12-24mm f4.5-5.6 DG EX, the 24-70mm f2.8 DG EX HSM and the 150-500mm f5.6-6.3 APO HSM on my new K-1.

They ALL work fine, quiet fast autofocus, no camera freezing or other apparent issues.

Yes, very bad news. Several members on this site indicated intent to buy this lens in advance of a K-1 purchase. Sorry you got caught up short. Is it usable for manual focus?

I am curious as to how your lens identifies itself in the EXIF. There are two variants in this regard. The first identifies itself as "8 16" and is displayed with no confusion as Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II or something similar. The second identifies as "8 255", a code shared in common with several other Sigma lenses.
Sigma 70-200 HSM II is my favourite lens in that range because of speed, accurate and silent AF and because of a minimum focus distance but it's not the end of the world.
I currently have few other options for outdoor shooting like Pentax F 70-210, Sigma 70-200 f/4,...and for indoor shooting I will use my A/F/FA 100,135 and 200mm primes.
Also new Tamron 70-200 costs similar amount as second hand Sigma HSM II. If Tamron is OK with K-1 I will switch easily to Tamron.
My guess that it is probably a K-1 firmware issue and will be fixed later, so I won't be in a hurry to sell Sigma HSM II.

p.s. Anybody with K-1 and Tamron SP AF 70-200mm F/2,8 Di LD [IF] MACRO ? Combo works or not?

Be aware that Tamron still uses screwdrive AF with the few lenses they sell with Pentax bayonet mount. Thus this lens will be both noisier and slower to focus than the Sigma HSM would be, were it functioning as intended.

It's more than probable that Tamron has licensed the bayonet protocol - instead of re-engeneering it. Tamron is OEM manufacturer for several "Pentax"-branded lenses, the 15-30 is just the newest addition.

Strange, though, that Tamron offers no SDM lens for Pentax. Hopefully Tamron will change their stance towards Pentax compatibility; they have some really nice lenses like the 150-600, that I'd love to see on my K-1. And as Sigma has repeatedly proven, it wouldn't do harm to leave the OIS mechanism in the lens, thus giving users the possibility to have a stabilized OVF image.

This has been a longstanding gripe between Canon owners and Sigma. A faithful, but older, Sigma will often cause freezes, lockups, and error messages on a brand new body. It also happens, albeit a bit more rarely, between Nikons and Sigmas.
No doubt this is why Sigma introduced that docking station for their lenses, so firmware could be updated to remedy such problems.

Another question comes to mind, however. Why do we refer to aftermarket lenses and accessories as "third party"?

I mean, does anyone make a "second party" lens, or battery?
@Ontarian50: There are the camera maker, the lens maker, and the party you see when you stand in front of a mirror ;-)

I wonder of the OS version of the Sigma 70-200 works on the K1 since it is a different and newer model than the HSM macro version
Hi all!

I'm curious as well - has anybody tried the combo "K-1" and "Sigma 70-200 mm f2.8 APO EX DG OS HSM"? So far I'm reading of lens version "II" to be problematic.

Some background info: I'm longing to get a K-1 ... I even attended the second K-1 roadshow event in Germany, but I hesitated for several reasons. Now that people offer DNGs to play with (in Darktable) and the quality of the camery gets proven, it becomes difficult to resist So solid info on lens compatiblity would be incredible helpful to me - since I missed and miss a chance to check operation of this lens.

Cheers,
Christoph

PS: First posting - although I've consumed all K-1 related threads since about 4 monts Thanks for all that great information so far!!!

Apparently the "8 16" version of Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II works well on the K-1.
Cf. this picture at chassimages forum.

It is possible that all faulty lenses are "8 255". According to ExifTool this LensID has been used at least for
- Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II
- Sigma 50-150mm F2.8 II APO EX DC HSM
- Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG HSM
- Sigma 50-200mm F4-5.6 DC OS
- Sigma 4.5mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Circular Fisheye
- Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG APO HSM
- Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM
and probably (but this lens is not in ExifTool) for
- Sigma 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG APO HSM

It is 8 255 (not 225).

If you list all exif information it will be at line 178 like this:

Lens Type : Sigma Lens (8 255)

"exiftool -n -LensType" prints the Lens ID in its numerical form.

That is not a complete listing.

Do just as Ptitboul said:
exiftool -n -LensType yourfile.jpg

That command will return just your lens type, something like this:
C:\>"exiftool(-k)" -n -LensType imgp2834.jpg
Lens Type : 8 255
-- press RETURN --

In case you want complete exif listing of all tags type something like this: "exiftool(k)" -a -u -g1 yourfile.jpg >yourfile.exif

As example:
C:\>"exiftool(k)" -a -u -g1 imgp2834.jpg >imgp2834.exif
C:\>notepad imgp2834.exif

Hello guys,

I would like to ask, I have sigma 70-200 F2.8 APO EX (non HSM, non MACRO), It should be this Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 APO EX Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database
My question is: is this lens for FF ? There is many version of this lens and I couldn't find info about this old version. In my opinion this lens is not FF because it isn't DG or am I wrong ? I would be fine if this version is for FF too. Thanks :-)

As I understand it, the Sigma DG series lenses are full frame.

Sigma is awful in that they fail to keep information resources available for discontinued lenses. As far as I can see by viewing old reviews your lens should cover the full frame sensor in a K1.

This information is sufficient to tell that it is a "8 255" lens.

The reason is that many Sigma lenses say that they are "8 255", and ExifTool tries to guess which it is by looking at the focal length and aperture. In your case, ExifTool narrowed it to two possibilities.
However, there is only one model that says it is "8 16". Therefore your lens is not "8 16", it would have been detected as 70-200.
