Pentax K-1 and Metz 50 AF-1

Hi everyone!

So I got my K-1 today. As you all know it does not have onboard flash so I fitted my Metz 50 AF-1 and it fires full power all the time. No P-TTL, no HSS...

Is it just me or does it need a firmware update?

/T

A fw update for sure. And it may be on both sides. The Flash and the K-1. Speak to MetZ and find out if you need one. They will most likely ask you to send it in for a fw update unless there is a way to do it yourself. For K-1 stay tuned on the pentax forums or their FW page.

I think the 50 AF-1 is one of the Metz models with a USB port for firmware updates. I can't find it now, but there was a post a few days ago about the same issue with another Metz model.

The flash I can update myself but latest firmware is from 2014. I have sent them an e-mail.

I was wrong about one thing, they do communicate but the output is wrong.

I tried searching but could not find a thread on the issue.

On one of the other threads I read a suggestion to drop the sync speed to 1/180 from 1/200.

I don't know if it works, but it's something to try...

Try to clean the contact point of the flash?

I tried with the Metz 58 AF-2. Beginning, i was unable to get it to work, not sure is it because i did not set to M mode.

After that, i found the PTTL came out and able to select it. Shot at 1/200.

Were you using a legacy lens?

No, I tested several lenses to ensure it was'nt something like that...

---------- Post added 05-03-16 at 11:23 PM ----------

I have found that the camera and flash are talking. When setting it to HSS it becomes possible to choose higher shutter speeds but it still overexposes. I have to close down the aperture alot to have usable images. It is like it does not calculate the amount of flash...

---------- Post added 05-03-16 at 11:36 PM ----------

Sooo. This is weird.

I changed the crop mode on the camera to Crop. Then it responds as it did on the K-3. The camera setting for flash output reflects on the image. In FF mode it does not change if I put +1 or -2 but now it does not overexpose anymore... Nor in the Auto Crop mode.

What is happening here?

---------- Post added 05-03-16 at 11:40 PM ----------

I have to revise my statement... I changed lens and it started to overexpose again and stopped listen to the settings in camera. It responds correctly when in Crop mode. Not in FF mode. It also gives me a black frame when in HSS and FF, not all the time but 9 out of 10. First I thought the flash was charging but it was not...

I collected my K1 from a friend last night as he brought it in from Vietnam for me. I tested the K1 + FA31 and the Metz 58AF-1 and I could see PTTLHSS on the flash's LCD.

It says PTTL HSS on the flash but does it actually give you a good exposure on high speeds?

Pentax and metz are aware of the problem so there will be a fix in the near future.

Bolt VS 570P mode HSS TTL

To complete the information on this kind of problem here is the copy of the message that I just sent to Adam ...

" Hi Adam, I have news on the Bolt 570. This morning I mounted the flash on the K1 and I go in the mode "HSS" to activate it. And, by manipulating the body I took a picture without wanting it. And surprise, there was a flash while the exposure was in Hyper TV at 1 / 400s. I want to repeat the test after putting the crop mode in FF because I had just mounted the Samy 20mm in place of the Sigma 8-16mm in APSC. And there, no Flash! . I put a little time to understand the problem:
The TTL and the HSS TTL only work in the APSC crop mode, I tried to crop 1:1 and Auto, no fire.
It's very strange (It's my Karma: D). The problem seems to come from the body. I also tested in in TTL mode HSS "manual zoom", no flash.
Finally I tried in Manual HSS and same thing, fire in crop mode APSC and does not work in FF. I'll still look on the web if I find something on similar subject with other flash and, perhaps, report to Pentax ... Or you? "

Best Regards
Bruno
