Pentax F 70-210mm looking promising

Tomorrow I plan to try the Tamron 28-75mm, F 35-70mm and the F 70-210mm lenses. I have better glass, but have a soft spot for the F lenses. I will post pictures if they make a good showing.

Oh heck, I just couldn't wait to try the F 70-210mm so I broke out my flash and snapped a few shots tonight.

Well not a cheap lens but I put my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 on with the Pentax 1.4 converter and the camera went into auto crop mode. Didnt expect that at all. Without the converter FF mode was elected.

For what it is worth, I have not seen anywhere the Pentax FA 24-90 1:3.5-4.5 IF AL mentioned. It is a pretty rare lens and when you find one it costs a bundle. The optics are very good and so is IQ, shame only it is extremely flimsily and poorly build. It literally rattles when you pick it up, it is that loose in the barrels. It doesn't seem to harm the IQ though. I have got one and have just tested it with the K-1. For that I used the Metz 64 AF -1, which by the way works faultlessly with the K-1.

FA 24-90/3.5-4.5 AL [IF]

Cheers

Okay, I think I'm missing something here. My M 50/1.4 is also showing the F--; is there a setting for manual lenses I'm missing?

EDIT: Found it. Menu C4, enable shutter when aperture ring is not set to A.

Yeah, you have to do this on all Pentax bodies, Whateverist, not just the K-1.

Enquiring minds do want to know why, though. ☺

That just makes it worse, cause it means I did this on my K5ii and forgot

I love my FA 24-90, great IQ and a great FL range for a walk-around zoom. I was quietly resenting your comment that this lens rattles when you pick it up, so I shook mine to disprove this foul allegation. However, my copy also rattles when handled. However, I must insist that it does not necessarily rattle when you are only picking it up; with my copy you actually need to shake it gently in order to obtain the rattling sound. I also notice that when the lens has a fast telephoto zooming feature--if it is set at 24mm, you can quickly zoom to 90mm simply by pointing it downward as it unwinds itself.

I hardly ever hear references to this lens, although the Forum has favorable reviews. With the sparse references to this lens, it is a little surprising that it has held its value so well.

Couple of shots attached using on-board flash.

That's the lens with a good reputation I got mixed up with a 28-80 I saw in a pawn shop.

I didn't buy it, I dodged a bullet! 😉

Hi

Thanks for the reply.
My sarcasm metre was unable to detect whether this is a tongue in cheek comment or not. But the needle is drifting in that direction. Of course the lens does not rattle by merely picking it up, one has to move it from side to side in a controlled motion to experience the somewhat excessive tolerance in the barrel assembly. And you are right, the quick adjustment from 24 to 90mm by holding the lens down is obviously not to be considered zoom creep but rather to be admired as a clever function.

Joking aside, the optical quality of this lens is outstanding and its greatest strength, and I hazard a guess, the reason for the hefty price tag as well as the the difficulty in procuring one.

Thanks again for your input.

Just picked up a cheap Takumar 135mm f2.5 for 25!

Does suffer from flare and poor contrast but in ideal conditions its very usable, this taken at about 10 feet through a window.

Yes, totally tongue in cheek. The lens is somewhat of an anomaly to have such great image quality and such low build quality. With its excellent image quality, it would be a priceless classic if it had excellent build quality.
