I just did a little outing just to show how great is the FA 28-70 f4 AL :
Don't fall for the marketing that new is better. A sharp lens will still be sharp when the K1000D with 100 Megapixel comes out!

One thing that we found out using the K1 is that the pixel or so of purple fringing is not that big of a deal when you have 36MP!

I bought this lens 30€, mint from japan, and paid 30€ of TAX (thank you french system!)

Money well spent if you ask me.

The lens is a dream to carry. Very fast and sharp.

Save them as they are full rez and view them on a 4K TV screen...

That is sharp.

It is sort of hard to appreciate the photos when the pixel dimensions are wider than even a 4K monitor. The conventional solution is to post somewhere around 800-1200 pixels on the long axis* and provide a link to the full size version. Alternatively, full resolution crops of the center and corner(s) may be provided to help those who wish to pixel peep.

Eventually sensors will be better than the best lens that can be built. For example a 600 Megapixel camera would require lenses about the size of the Hubble Space telescope to not be limited by their wide open diffraction effects. Lenses don't change because they get put on a high resolution camera, the high resolution camera shows everything that lens can - or ever could - resolve.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating and I am expecting that many lenses originally designed for film will deport themselves quite admirably on the K-1 sensor and that even some of the more pedestrian zooms may surprise their owners.

I did a shoot-off today with the following lenses on the K-1:

SMC Pentax 135mm 3.5
Tair 11A 135mm 2.8
Pentacon 135mm 2.8
Hanimex 200mm 3.3

My primary motivation was that my Sigma 70-200 APO bricks my K-1, and I need something fast-ish, FF, and workable on the K-1.

The tests were front-lit, side-lit, and back-lit, mostly looking for PF, bokeh of OOF point sources, color, handling etc.

It's not even worth posting images - they all performed in the same league, more or less.

But for splitting hairs, here are some comments:

If I were shooting video and needed tele for something (titles? compression?) the Hanimex looks more cinematic. But in some conditions it's bokeh can be harsh. But only in some conditions.

For handling, I'd prefer not to use the M42 to K mount ring. As much as I thought the Tair was magic, which it can be at 1:1 on APS-C, futzing around during lens changes can be tough under time constraints.

The Pentacon has the build quality of a fine watch.

The Pentax SMC 3.5 - even though it's not 2.8, is solid as a tank and worth whatever you've paid for yours. And the difference between 3.3 and 2.8 is nearly zip.

If I had to rank them:

1) Pentacon (overall quality, image, handling)
2) Pentax (overall handling, quality)
3) Tair 11A (razor sharp at any f-stop, not built like a tank, more like a bunker. It's double the weight of the others
4) Hanimex 200mm (at f/3.3, it's max, it's nice but for portraits you be yelling at your subject the'd be so far away :P

But I don't have to rank them. The Tair has a stop-less aperture. The Pentax is K-mount. The Hanimex does have a bit more reach. The Pentacon feels like a $2000 lens. So no eBay posting this month

* on reviewing the posted images, the Hanimex seems to be the one for the hexagonal bokeh, which I kinda like. The Pentacon is still pretty nice though!

I headed to the lake to take some landscape pictures but the sunset really didn't turn out as hoped. This was one of the first pics with my K-1 as I grabbed my old F 70-210 for a couple quick snaps of a bird silhouette. Not too bad for a cheapish lens and a spur of the second shot.

Nope...it was a desirable and expensive lens when it was made and remains so today. It should suck on your K-1, however, due to it having been designed for an inferior capture medium.* I will take it off your hands and will even carry the cost of shipping.

* If you are getting good results, it is only because you have not mastered the art of peeping FF pixels. In a few weeks you will be begging me to take the lens off your hand.

I've yet to do much other than wander out in front of the townhouse and snapshot plants, but these are both from a SMC-Pentax FA 28-105mm F4-5.6 (Power Zoom) @ 105mm.

Another "cheapy" outstanding lens on the k1 OS the Pentax M 28mm f3.5
Pretty outstanding sharpness and color IMHO.

I forgot about cheapo Sigma 70-300mm DL super (not DG version) . After reading this thread I took it for the test.
Frankly speaking, it's an offense to put that lens on K-1 I mean, it's nice budget lens, and I started my long zoom journey with the similar Sigma APO, but to spend money on FF and put that glass on it? I don't think so.

The focus was not that completely bad in AF.S (burst mode), and started hunting much more in AF.C, especially when the battery indicator turned yellow.
Fringing is colorful, mostly purple, even if the aperture is closed down to f8.
Sharpness at 300 is typical for that lens- poor, I used to go till 250mm.

Ok, the long story short: I'd love to have that range lens for K-1, that weight as well, but in quality of DA*300 and under $1K
