K1 Freezes with Sigma 24-70 EX DG HSM

I purchased this lens used to use with my K1 but it totally freezes all functions and the camera will not turn off. On my K3 it work fine except it will not focus in Live View. Does anyone have recommendations? I do have a warranty from KEH.

I would pop the battery out, dismount the lens, and check the contacts on the lens. Sounds like it has an issue if it won't focus in LV on a known good working camera like your K-3.

Sigma does not pay a license fee to camera manufactures as other brands like Tamron and Tokina. They reverse engineer the auto focus system in the lens to work with the various camera manufacture bodies. When a new body comes out from the manufactures Sigma must update their firmware to ensure the lens work with the new body. On some lens that do not have USB ports you might have to return the lens to Sigma for a firmware update.

Maybe that same firmware update will enable LV AF, as well.

Most likely it is a lens firmware issue. I had a similar problem with my Sigma 15mm f2.8 fisheye with one of my Canon bodies (I used to be a Canon guy). The lens worked with all my cameras until I got one of the later models at which point the lens stopped autofocusing. I called Sigma and they offered to upgrade the firmware for free. I just had to ship the lens to them. They upgraded the firmware and shipped it back to me all for FREE. Now that is service that is second to non. Try to call Sigma's customer service and see if they will do the same for you. My incompatibility issue is from about 7-8 years ago. I do not know what Sigma's firmware upgrade policies are these days.

It's possible that lenses produced earlier in a production run (or in an entirely different run) might have older firmware to later ones?

Sigma HSM lens issues are discussed in several threads.

A few people have reported the newest HSM ll lenses seem to work. Some older Sigma's seem to share the lens identifier 18 255 (IIRC) which confuses all manufacturers' body firmware.

On K-1 it is thought the 1/200 flash sync speed confuses Metz flash FW. Some reports suggest lowering flash sync to 1/180 is a temporary workaround. Another report suggests shooting in crop mode works.

All discussions agree we'll need to update FW on some Sigma lenses and Metz flashes to make them work with K-1.

This isn't a camera issue.

I have this lens and have no issues with it on the K1, whereas on my K3 and K5IIs it has focusing problems.

See here...

All Pentax DSLRs before the K-1 work just fine with those lenses.

Which bodies of other manufacturers have trouble with this lens ID as well?

oops, it happened to me now.
My K-1 also froze with Sigma 24-70 HSM.
So the solution is to call Sigma customer service?

Some Sigma HSM lenses definitely need a firmware upgrade -- don't know about the K-1, they may not even support it since they've given up on Pentax, but non-working LV was a problem on previous bodies with some of their lenses with older firmware. Used to be they'd do the firmware upgrade fast & free (you probably have to pay for one-way shipping), hopefully they still will. I'd certainly contact them.

Just because that lens was on it doesn't mean it is the lens at fault though. FWIW, both my K3 and my K1 experience extremely rare but occasional lock ups. Usually to the point of needing to pull the batteries, sometimes it will correct after power down (although the power down takes a long time).

This is with a variety of lenses, and I do not use the 24-70 on the K3.
