That FOV is weird to me. Much wider than I am used to.

It is weird putting a 50mm lens on the K1 and having it so wide compared to what I am used to seeing with a 50mm lens. It is also weird with the rest of my FF compatible lenses being so much wider than they should be as compared to what I am used to. Looks like the K3 will definitely be the telephoto and smaller grab & go with the 18-135, and the K1 will be my wide and landscape one!

Anyone else find the wider field of view strange?

Back to film days. Approx 70% of my photography was on 35mm or 6x4.5 film, so not really expecting to be phased by different FoV when I get my K1 at the end of the year!

Rub it in. Saving now to hopefully get a K-1 for Christmas. I miss the "normal" 35mm field of view, can hardly wait. You could always buy some longer telephotos!

What he said! Much as I have loved my APS-C Pentax cameras, the constraints at the "normal" and wide end have been a consistent frustration. I have counted myself extremely fortunate to have had my FA 35/2 as a fast walk-around prime, but in almost a decade of use was not able to find suitable options for wide angle.

On 35mm FF, "wide" starts somewhere around 35mm focal length* and by the time you hit 28mm you are wide enough for all but the broadest vistas and cramped internals spaces. The value proposition for relatively fast (f/2.8) 28mm lenses has traditionally been very high with the better models having a sweet combination of low distortion, flat field, and high resolution at most apertures. Oh, and I might add that most of those 28s are very compact. I have not found similar attributes at the equivalent ~19mm focal length for primes or zooms from any maker. Things are even worse (with the possible exception of the DA 15/4 Limited) for ~16mm focal length for a 24mm equivalent.

Moving up to "normal", I shot a fast 50 for over a decade as my only lens. That says something, I think.

Steve

* I was a late convert to the 35mm focal length on my 35mm film cameras. All I can say is that you have never tried it, you should do so.

Having futzed around with 35mm for 45+ years before picking up an APS-C camera the cramped FOV on my primes irritates me at times. I can't wait to get back to an FOV I'm used to. Not that I'll abandon my APS-C body.

I expected the k-1 fov to look weird since it has been 30 years since i shot film. But i found it to be very natural and have had no problem adjusting.

I fired up the DA40xs on live view and was sorely disappointed with the field of view, thinking it didn't look any different from aps-c.

I then flipped "crop" from "auto" to "FF" and everything got better...

And that viewfinder is awesome... I can see so much...

The overlay in the VF is pretty cool as compared to my K3 (and the K5 and Kx I previously had). Ohh, I love being able to use my phone to control it too.

I feel like I have come home from a foreign country.

135 is medium
200 is long
43 is normal
28 is wide
20 is whoa!

I've struggled for years with FoV with manual lenses - and now it all seems easy.

I remember a few years ago when one of our younger forum member bought an 80s-era film kit on a lark...

First post: "OMG! The viewfinder is like looking through a window!..."

Second post: "I just tried the 28mm and it is really wide...I mean incredibly wide..."

A couple of months after buying my first DSLR, a K20d, I picked up a set of cheap old lenses off eBay -- and it included a Ricoh film camera. I don't remember the model, maybe XR-10?

But yeah, I had the same reaction then. I ran a couple of rolls of film through it and it was soooo easy to focus!

I'm looking forward to picking up a K-1 when I can afford one.

That's how I feel too, framing feels a lot more natural now. I'm especially happy with my fast 50 being a fast normal. I suspect shooting with a zoom, you wouldn't notice it as much.

I have a couple zooms. A35~105 and K45~125 and FA24~90 I struggle with. DA55~300 not so much.

So, can I now say that a 24mm lens is REALLY a 16mm lens? I mean equivalence and all...
