K-1 fps in AF-C?

I know that the Pentax specifications say that the frames per second rating of the K-1 is 4.4. I have not seen anything stating if this goes down when the camera is in AF-C mode. I know with my K-5ii, the specs say 7fps, it tests out at around 6.7 fps in AF-S, but when you move to AF-C, it drops to somewhere in the fours. Is there a similar reduction with the K-1?

I have found in certain sports situations, I have switched to AF-S, to get that high fps.

There's a FPS priority setting that will help you realize the maximum framerate even when AF is on. Based on rough testing it looks like the K-1 is able to maintain its max. framerate in AF-C with FPS priority set, though it does pause if excessive AF adjustments are needed. So I guess it ultimately depends on the speed of the lens, what you're shooting, and how good your tracking technique is

I was thinking that I would not want pictures that were OOF with the FPS setting, but I should try it out. It is only certain situations, and compared to AF-S I would think it might be better.

Note he said "AF-C" as in "autofocus continuous", not "APS-C".

Yes, thanks. If anyone who has a K-1 can confirm that they get the same framerate whether in AF-S or AF-C, I would appreciate that.

Ha, I came to the forum today to post this question. When I did a search on it, I found my own post from 2 years ago that was never answered. I hope someone knows the answer now.

The Mark II doesn't slow down in AF-C. I'm not sure about the K1.

Based on Adam's comment above, AF-C (FPS priority) may pause if a lot of AF action is needed. AF-S (focus priority) should simply fire the burst once lock is attained. I suspect that AF-S (release priority) may also pause during the burst, though it is hard to say. Such has not been my experience with the K-3, though the K-1 may be different.

Now I'll have to go do a test with the K-1ii and see how fast. Give me a few days and I'll report back.

Thanks very much. i do some sports shooting, so under 4.4 fps in AF-C would be limiting.

The k1 Mark 2 doesn't slow down if you hold the shutter and the af button. It is faster than the K3 in both modes when the shutter and af button are depressed.

Imaging Resource did test fps in their K-1 and K-1 II reviews, but not running AF-C:

Pentax K-1 Review - Performance

Pentax K-1 II Review - Performance

Both ended up showing 4.5 fps in RAW on Continuous H. Most times anyone shooting in AF-C will also be in Continuous H drive mode, so that gets you pretty close to learning AF-C performance vs AF-S.

Perhaps the CIPA standard for testing fps may not include shooting in AF-C mode, so that might explain why specs for AF-C performance are hard to come by. But AF-S vs AF-C on a static test chart shooting the same focussing area (eg centre point or even Auto 33) shouldn't show much difference.

I have now tested the K-1ii under the following conditions:

AF-C: Shooting RAW.
AF-C: Shooting JPG.
AF-S: Shooting RAW.
AF-S: Shooting JPG.

I can confirm that my K-1ii will give 4-5 shots per second for AF-S and AF-C, RAW or JPG. There does not appear to be any measurable difference for either AF-C or AF-S, nor for RAW vs JPG. The buffer does fill faster when shooting RAW though.

4-5 shots/second in AF-C makes K-1 exactly equal to the other 36MP full-frames out there with probably the same sensor - the A7R (4fps) and the D800/D810 (4/5 fps).
