Review from French site

Test - Pentax K-1 : nos conclusions - Focus Numérique

  • Getting disappointing low light auto focus
  • Autofocus referred too slow screen
  • Burst only 4.6 fps 24x36 too just for the action photo
  • AF coverage restricted 24x36
  • No permanent AF in video
  • Turning a little too slow
  • No built-in flash
  • No USB output 3
  • No consideration of UHS II format
  • Screen not fully articulable impossible to return it completely, not touch.
  • No customizable menu
  • No contextual help menus
  • No 4K video
  • No MRAW or sRAW mode for smaller files
  • No anti-flicker Mode

  • very good noise control up to ISO 6400
  • mechanical stabilization of the sensor (works with all lenses)
  • Excellent finish of the casing.Small footprint.Finish weatherproof.
  • nice optical viewfinder
  • 5 programmable housing configurations
  • Swivel LCD
  • Lighting parts of the SLR with LEDs
  • GPS / integrated Wi-Fi
  • RAW DNG (PEF possible)
  • microphone input / headphone output
  • optical viewfinder wide and accurate
  • Autofocus silent (engine SDM)
  • 6 fps burst cropping APS-C
  • Triggering pretty sweet

Balance sheet

In the end, apart from a withdrawal autofocus compared to the competition, the K-1 is an attractive casing, well and delivers a good picture quality. It therefore receives a recommended. One question remains, more philosophical: Pentax should he get a 24x36 now? For pentaxistes who had not yet crossed the threshold of a Canon or Nikon shop, the answer is obvious. Taking a step back, Sony's strategy to leave the field of SLR Canon and Nikon seems more appropriate. For if the Pentax K-1 is a good SLR, it does not have the technological innovations that will toggle the selection of a photographer. As I wrote some years ago, the full Pentax size already exists for years and is now called 645Z . This is actually a lot more expensive, but it's also much more singular than 24x36.

The French never like anything as a basic principle. If they didn't totally massacre it, then the K-1 must be excellent.

P.S. the horrible defect of "turning a little too slow" most probably will not be a show-stopper.

The guys at Focus Numérique are not objective, i demonstrated this comparing the K-1 Af coverage vs the D810 (or D750) and the 5Ds R coverage: they are almost the same.
So why don't they write "AF coverage restricted 24x36" in the D810, D750 and 5Ds R test?
Because they like Nikon and Canon and dislike Pentax.

No customizable menu
That's incorrect.

One of the menus now supports user-configuration.

They are furthermore missing a lot of the obvious pros, e.g., 5-axes (instead of just 3) stabilisation for a 5 stop advantage, Pixel-Shift, WiFi, etc.
