Pentax K-5iis with DA 50mm f1.8 vs Pentax K-1 with FA 28mm f2.8

I was interested in comparing the performance of the K-1 to my old K-5iis. So I used a studio still life lit by a single YN560 strobe. I know this is an apples to oranges comparison so I took my oldest, mediocre lens from my Pentax film days- the SMC Pentax-FA 28mm F2.8 AL and put it on the K-1. I then used the sharpest APS-C lens I have, the DA 50mm F1.8 and put it on the K5iis and took the same picture (adjusted for magnification so the view would be the same). The aperture for both lenses was set @ F8 (F8 and be there...). The K-1 with the old 28mm lens was much sharper, more contrasty, with better colors. So I guess buying the K-1 was the right decision...

The FA 28mm is a pretty good lens- plus the K-1 has built in correction profiles for it

I wish my most mediocre lens was an FA 28mm. They don't seem very hot wide open but f8 is another story from the sample shots I've seen.

Yes... while I'm pleased to hear the K-1 has produced better images with that older lens, we need to understand and see why that might be. There are *so* many factors potentially at play...

Here are 100% crop of the same area of both pictures. The first image is the K-1 with the 28mm f 2.8.

I haven't tried the DA50 on the K-1 yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll check this.

I think I was the first person to ever report that here

I've used it on film a few times, and it seems to function quite well. I've not yet seen any examples of it on the K-1 though (I've seen plenty of the DA35 and DA*55, but none of the DA50 as yet). I'm just interesting in seeing how the corners hold up under close inspection!

I figure if it de-vignettes untraceably in post, we can declare it FF and call it done. After all, don't some of the DA lenses vignette a bit on crop anyway? Certainly if it's no worse than that, we may as well regard it as the real deal.

I suspect the D-FA 50/1.8 will be this lens with metal mount, quickshift and WR. In that case, Pentax, please go the extra mile and give us a bayonet hood for it.

28mm on FF gives a very different field of view from a 50mm on APS-C. Try to switch those lenses for the next test. Test both at Tav with full aperture and same shutter speed.

I'm not sure what the takeaway is supposed to be from a test like this. The one thing that stands out is the rendering of the reds (battery, lettering on the Sally Hansen bottle). My sense is that the K1 has done a much better job.

Possibly, but we'd need to know whether the images were in-camera processed JPEGs - and if so, with what settings - or RAW files - processed how, and with what colour profiling (embedded, software default, custom profile for that camera / lens combination) etc.

Yeah, this is sort of like comparing apples and volkswagens.
