FF Teleconverter for K-1

A shot from early this morning from K-1, Pentax HD 150-450 f4.5-5.6, and Tamron F 1.4x Pz-AF MC4 Teleconverter. Works delightfully in these conditions, although I noticed some corner vignetting in another shot that had a pure white background. The lens and TC combination focused well in quite low light (cloudy early morning). 1/60th, f6.3, ISO 3200. Ability to hand-hold at 450mm times 1.4 at 1/60th and quickly get focus with this combination was excellent.

Post-processing: uncropped from full-frame DNG, resize to 1024 pixels wide and sharpen. No noise reduction applied (at ISO3200 wow!)

I will try out my Kenko TC later and post another shot.

I have tried this combination on my K3. It seemed to work pretty good on that camera too.

I find that the Pentax TC and the 150-450 not to be very good but I have yet to try it in really good light. It does vignette a bit but not very much.

Great shot Adrian. I know you mean to praise the SR, but that's not the whole story: you must have great technique. Getting a sharp photo at the equivalent of 630mm handheld takes a lot of skill.

Good to know I'm not the only one who loves to photograph banksias.

Excellent experimentation with TCs on longer focal length lenses. Thanks for sharing.

Perhaps one of us can try the Pentax F 1.7 AF Converter on these lenses and report the results here. I have heard some mixed results including good reports of its use on the poor man's tele the HD 55-300 mm WR lens.

Regards.

Hi

I hope you don't mind me latching on to your post but I thought this way people can compare one or the other without changing posts.

I shot this image from my upstairs office window. It is my preferred object for tests because it offers good challenges. The aircon unit is approx. 100m away.
It was shot late in the afternoon when in our region it gets dark quite quickly.

Pentax K-1, 150-450 with Pentax TC-F SMC 1.7X. handheld at 765mm. No crop. See the rest of the settings in EXIF, but please note that with this TC EXIF always notes FL as 350mm.
In PP - adjusted brightness, applied Tapaz DeNoise Ver.6 and a light sharpening.

Thanks

Forgot to add the 100% crop. As one can see the 1.7x TC certainly degrades the image but I think it remains to be entirely usable.

Thanks for your post Schraubstock Sir. My God! this ancient Pentax TC is simply marvelous. You were justified in applying a bit of de-noising and sharpness as it was amazing you handheld
a 765mm lens at just 1/180 secs. Pretty high ISO too.
Very little distortion and perspective bending too, looking at the brick wall. Amazing shot indeed. Perfect target for lens tests.
Since the SMC Pentax F 1.7x AF Adapter is seen as an "A" type lens by the camera no information about the focal length of the attached lens or the combo is transmitted to the camera.

Regards.

The K-1's SR mechanism simply is breathtaking. At this FL and speed certainly not every shot will be good but more than most will.

Cheers

One thing to remember is that if the TC does not transmit the combined focal length it will try to compensate for the wrong focal length and this may not be visible or it can do more damage than help.

A test shot from K-1 with Sigma 500 f4.5 APO DG EX and Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x TELEPLUS SHQ teleconverter. Full shot is uncropped, and second is 100% crop. Looks good to me.

Great work on that heron. The crop is about as clean as you can get, with any equipment.

quick backyard test using Sigma 500 f4.5...

at f5.6

1- is the Pentax TC
2- Vivitar (Tamron) 1.4
3 - No TC

Pentax TC shows some vignetting at f5.6.
Last fullsize photo is at f4.5 with Pentax TC. Vignetting not "horrible" but noticeable. Exposure tweaked a little high to highlight darker corners
Vivitar slightly less magnification than Pentax.
note field curvature distortion, especially evident in lower right (garden light) on Pentax TC.

Crops per Photoshop are equal to 175/180/195%

color is off on first crop and last full size because I process on ProPhoto. Apparently didn't convert to sRGB. Don't feel like redoing.
too lazy to do anything but crop in ACR. no processing.
