We'll have to agree to disagree then.
I agree that most folks don't go wider than 28mm but that is because cheap kit zooms started there. Canikon and pentax realized there is a market for wider and hence the newer zooms that start at 16mm. Also, the more desireable FF canikon zooms both start at 24mm.

FA 31mm bulky? I guarantee that anything new will be way bigger with the push toward silent AF and weather sealing. And that's a great opportunity to widen apertures compared to what they've been historically.

But yes, a budget FF prime series would eventually be nice.

My comment was based on several decades of shooting mostly landscape on 35mm film. During those years I never owned a "cheap kit zoom" for FF. Instead I used 28mm and 50mm primes exclusively for those subjects. I agree that 24mm is a useful focal length (FOV equivalent to the DA 15/4 Limited on APS-C), but adding a new 24mm would not plug the huge hole in the prime lineup for a moderately-priced options (Pentax has the FF wide zoom range covered very nicely down to 15mm).

To illustrate, I did a filtered query for FF primes from Nikon, Canon, and Pentax for 28mm and 31mm focal lengths. After filtering duplicates and specialty perspective control lenses from the results, I can summarize in a few points:

The $999 Pentax FA 31/1.8 Limited was the most expensive lens returned in the search
Nikon offers the 28/1.8G at $696
Canon offers the EF 28/1.8 USM at $509
Nikon offers two 28mm lenses below $500: an AF 28/2.8D ($287) and a manual focus 28/2.8 ($499)
At the sub-$500 price point Canon offers the AF 28/2.8 IS USM ($449)

A Pentax K-1 owner assembling a landscape kit has the following purchase options at present (listed by price, decreasing):

Pentax D FA 15-30/2.8 $1449
Pentax D FA 24-70/2.8 $1296
Pentax FA 31/1.8 Limited $999
Pentax D FA 28-105/3.5-5.6 $499
Tamron 28-75/2.8 $499
Samyang 24/1.4 $469

Adding a $500 D FA 24/2.8 would be an interesting option and the kit zoom could plug the gap at 28mm.

That Nikon 28 f/1.8G is a special lens, in darker times I considered changing systems and that lens would have been one of the reasons. I would really like a new 28mm from Pentax, f/2 or faster. The only options available for this are manual focus lenses in scarce supply and inflated value. I guess there is also Sigma 28 f/1.8, but I don't like the yellow colour cast of older Sigma lenses.

The FA 31 could fill my need if Ricoh ever updates it with WR. DC motor is nice too, but not a necessity if it makes the lens too big. As it is, I find it hard to justify paying the price it commands.

I don't have a K-1. I do have a K-3II and a Rokinon 85mm f1.4. It's tough to learn but magical. Just saying...it's cheap and effective, a contender I would recommend IMHO. I also have a Tamron 90mm f2.8 SP Di which is a tough rival but in a different way!

I'd almost certainly be game for a D-FA* 85 1.4 WR. We could well see it - I think weather-sealing and near-silent AF (new-style SDM) will be the differential from the FA77.

There just are not enough nice-condition second hand 85mm FA* and A* s in the market to satisfy demand. I reckon people hold on to them!

I wonder what the new Sigma 85 will bring to the table. I've been floored by how good the current one is optically, but since it preceded the "Art" era, it's not compatible with the dock, so I would not be surprised if that was the only change and the optics stayed pretty much the same.

There is a good chance that we get the Tamron 1.8 85 at first,cause there is nothing in this range and next year a new D FA* 1.4 85 PENTAX made.
Same range like 2.8 70-200.
What we get for sure is a new D FA* 2.8 200.
A second fullframe camera,maybe lower type is not in progress.
New converter for the current and next teleline is also very possible.
Lots of glass is in development and currently in progress.

good reminder to tamron according to the camera lab is in the same level of very expensive Otus, and has many chances of having been designed by the master Jun hirakawa

The A* 85/1.4 is a dead cold hands lens. It does green fringe a bit, but it's easily corrected during raw conversion.
