70-200 options for K1

Hi,
Just exploring 70-200 lens options for the K1.

I am seeing the new DFA 70-200, old Tamron 70-200 and old Sigma 70-200 HSM OS.

Reading Diglloyd.com he has said that the tested version of the DFA 70-200 is the worst 70-200 he has ever tested and not worthy of a write-up. Can anybody comment on their use of this new lens?

Ideally the tamron 70-200 is only 1150 odd grams so it is better suited for my landscape and travel use. Anybody tested it on the K-1 yet? or is there any reviews of it on other FF cameras that you know of?

Thanks

If I had to pick between someone like Diglloyd who makes a living with people clicking his blog or someone who actually makes a living using her gear I think I'll go with Lauren.

Personally I would like a 70-200ish f/4 to keep the weight down. Or a DFA*60-250 f/4.........

Optically the D FA 70-200mm is superb. Either they got a defective copy, or they didn't test it properly...

If you want corner-to-corner image quality, definitely go for the Pentax. It's a bit bulky, though, so that's also something to factor in.

I just got the Tamron on Monday and have taken maybe a couple dozen shots with it on my K1. It is crazy sharp, fast to focus, and has great color.....nothing to dislike about it that I can see.

I wanted the Pentax but I need other FF lenses too, and the Tamron is dirt cheap for a lens of this quality. I doubt the idiot that reviewed the Pentax has any credibility outside his circle of non-Pentax followers....my guess. The price was my only objection...if that doesn't bother you, it has better features than the Tamron...you may or may not need?

Regards!

Tamron after sundown...
1/200 handheld f3.5 ISO 1600 @ 200mm

It's not a wildlife lens really, but it was fast enough for the very dim light so I gave it a shot.
Regards!

So he's both arrogant and ignorant. The two sometimes go hand in hand.

What he really meant was he did not think he would generate enough ad clicks from a review to justify his time. I don't put a lot of faith in any online review that comes from a website that seems solely designed to generate revenue for it's owner. If clicks are the only purpose then I doubt the review is worth much.

Could you provide a link to that blog post? I can't seem to find it on his website. I did find a passing mention of the lens. It was in an article on Pentax macro lenses. He commented that the 70-200mm wasn't suitable for macro work, and for that reason he didn't test it for the purposes of that particular article. In another article on the K-1, the lens is listed, but the link goes to B&H Photo.

I would take this "review" (not worthy doing, HE says! ) and throw it in a garbage bin!
I was curious as to "whos is Digilyod", so I found this:
diglloyd - About Lloyd Chambers
" ... publishes a popular blog and a wide variety of articles and guides geared towards professional and advanced photographers."
He's supposedly a "computer expert" and an "avid cyclist" .... couldn't find out how "advanced" a photographer he is though ...

And as someone just mentioned in this thread, ask @LaurenOE who recently gave a short and positive critique of this lens.

Here is some evidence to back your contention:
"Lens evaluations: how much time I spend depends on the level of subscription interest (Pentax K1 coverage is in DAP), as that is the primary means by which I make my living, so much as I’d enjoy exploring old lenses and such, it comes down to ROI, a business decision."
DAP = "digilloyd Advanced Photography -- Lens and camera reviews, research and how-to covering Nikon and Canon DSLR bodies and lenses, along with related gear"

The Pentax 70-200 weighs 3.86 pounds according to listed B and H specs. I really don't see that as an overly tedious weight. I have a Sigma 150-500, it also weighs approximately that.

Regarding sensor tilt, as far as I know this is not an available function. I would also be concerned about planarity of the sensor to the lens mount when the sensor was in neutral tilt.
I thought this part was interesting.

Anyway, this is a subscription review service that determines which things to review by how much interest his subscribers have in a product. That's just business and I'm fine with it. But trashing something because he doesn't think it will generate him any revenue is a bit shady. If you don't want to waste your time, fine. Don't. And don't mouth off like an 'expert' about things you know nothing about. I'm not going to subscribe, so I bet he could care less what I think as well.

I own the Tamron 70-200. Just like on my K3, it is a little on the soft side at 2.8 on K1. However, stop it down to f3.5 or f4 and it becomes a beast in terms of sharpness. The only reason I may let the Tamron go and get the much more expensive Pentax would be for WR and possibly marginally better images at f2.8. If you are on a budget, get the Tamron and get it fast before Tamron decides to stop making it altogether. If cost is no issue, go with the Pentax. I have seen samples and reviews that are all positive.

I think somebody has a Sigma 100-300mm f4 for sale in the Marketplace, which would be approximately the same size and weight as a 70-200mm. True, it's f/4 instead of f/2.8, but you also get quite a bit more reach. I've been surprised at how usable f4 is on my K-30, so it should be a a good deal better on a K-1, what with the amazing high ISO and the shallower DOF of FF. Just something to consider.
