I wouldn't overlook the 28-105mm as a good walk around/landscape lens. The price is very good for the image quality you get and its zoom range makes it a very good general purpose lens.

FYI: The 1000 f8 weighs in @ 11.7 lb (5290g), that's more than double the weight of the new 150~450 (5.1lb; 2325g). That's the weight of the lens alone. I'm not sure that it's included, but originally the 1000 f8 came with a dedicated tripod that was also a beast. And the wooden trunk case...... Do not think of it as a "walkabout" lens.
