New K-1 died after a few shots!

I have just received my brand new K-1. It came together with the D FA 28-105mm lens.
I mounted the lens and put in a fully charged D-LI90 battery. Then played around a bit with the basic settings (date, time, sound etc.).

After a few test shots (5 or so) there was an annoying "mechanical" sound - like the shutter moving rapidly (?), for a second or so. I turned the camera off and back on again. Now the back lcd display only showd a weird colourful pattern. This will now always show after I switch the camera on. Also the shutter does not work anymore. Switching on/off or changing the battery does not help either.

Sad, but I´m going to send it back.

Anybody with a similar problem?

I don't own a K-1 but was your battery new or one left over from previous uses in other cameras?

I have heard of such things being caused by bum batteries.

Not saying this is the case with yours, but before you haul off and send anything around I would charge the battery that came with it (or another battery if that's the offending one) and do a power on battery pull.

Out of curiosity I would check the shutter count on that camera, just in case if you got someone's return from the seller.
If your battery was good and fully charged, I don't think it's normal to have such a problem.

Talk to your dealer to arrange an exchange.

Battery is one that I have in use with my K3, original Pentax D-LI90. Right now I´m busy charging the new one that came with the K-1. Going to try that out once it is fully loaded.

I was wondering a bit when I unpacked. The Mode dial was not on "AUTO". So someone might have played around with it.
Checking the shuttercount is a good idea. I´ll see if I can sort it out using PhotoMe.

Bought it online at a large german photoshop (Foto Erhardt). They are usually quite reliable (I think). Could not get the K-1 at any local shop, none in stock!

OK. Shuttercount reads 32 - 7 of which are mine! So someone has played around with the camera before it came to me.
Might have been on display at the dealers shop? Have to talk to them about it!

It doesn't matter which camera this is, the important thing is: it is SUPPOSED to be NEW, and not a demo.
Obviously, as you mention, someone has been fiddling with it.
So, you talk to them about it and tell them you are sending it back in return for a NEW camera ... NOT a demo !!!
I would be very peeved if this happened to me.

Hope things will work for you.

Cheers!

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions everybody!

I will see if I can sort this out with the dealer. I posted him an e-mail explaining my problems.
Most probably I´m going to send the K1 back and ask for replacement - a brand new one this time!

Anyone know how the shutter count utility works with regard to deleted photos? So if someone checked shutter count with a particular jpeg, but had deleted photos that were taken before, does the counter count those photos?

I apologize if this is obvious and I have overlooked an obvious answer.

Yes. The camera stores internally a running count of every photo made with the camera, and displays the running count in every image EXIF. It doesn't depend on your camera settings.
