Pentax K-1 thoughts

I just got the K-1 the other day. More than a year ago I was using a full out Q7 kit. I had almost all the lenses and was going to use the 08 for my professional real estate photography. Then came serious rumors that the Pentax full frame would actually be made. Upon hearing this I had to prepare. I sold all my Q gear (ill get them all back one day) and started thinking about the lenses I would want on this camera.

Knowing that the DA*55mm is full frame capable I picked one up. However due to financial needs I no longer have it (will definitely be seeking to get another one to use on K-1).

I needed something for real estate photography of course, and being on a budget I decided to get the somewhat rare and unknown FAJ 18-35mm. This gives roughly the same field of view as the 12-24mm on crop pentaxes. And after trying it on the K-1 I think its decent especially for the money. Only gripe would be the purple fringing even stopped down but its a nice lightweight lens.

Next I thought id get a nice walk around lens. I wound up picking the FA 28-200mm which is actually a rebadged Tamron (pentax has been doing this for a long time it seems). I tried it out on crop pentax bodies and found the lens to be abysmal. It was either super soft even stopped down or just never hitting the right focus. I was going to sell it but wound up having it by the time the K-1 arrived. On the K-1 I've found this lens works great. Still not the sharpest lens but it wasn't as bad as when used on the K-50/K-01. It was certainly worthy of a goofing around lens for fun. So I'm likely keeping it.

Next is another lens that I got for free as a deal along with another lens. This is the Takumar (bayonet) 135mm f/2.5 (non multicoated). And I must say that if you have a K-1 and you don't have this lens, get this lens. Its so cheap and extremely sharp. Of all my other two lenses this lens does the K-1 the most justice. Amazing bokeh and a joy to use.

As for the K-1 itself its the best camera I've ever owned. It has the best ergonomics of any camera (both shape and button layout). The third dial being able to adjust ISO is what every camera has needed and the K-1 now delivers it. I like the LCD monitor. Even if I wind up hardly ever using it functionally its just cool. So far the -3ev AF seems a bit more iffy than it did on the K-5II. The pixel shift is amazing and will definitely be using for real estate photos. I tried editing raw files in lightroom and its amazing how much you can pull out of the shadows.

Simply put this camera is amazing. I am interested though in the K-70. It seems that the advantages of FF vs APS-C cameras is shrinking. Interesting to see what the future holds

Well, that's the size effect of the size of the sensor that improves the MTF by some 30%. An average lens on APSC become decent on FF. Even a mirror lens can become decent on FF.

I have a Sigma AF 18-35/3.5-4.5 Aspherical which is older and rather similar to the FAJ 18-35.
I made today some experiments at f/8 on a K-1 and it is acceptable, but not great.
Could you tell me how it compares to the FAJ 18-35?
Here are links to two sample pictures, at 18mm and 35mm, processed by DCU5 with default settings.

You know I think you're right. When I tried aps-c lenses on the Q7 many weren't that good looking. I think the same thing you mentioned is at play
