C) If you have trouble with the first frame having a different brightness than frames 2, 3, & 4, try triggering the flash about one shutter time BEFORE starting the series
Or enable 'Equalize brightness of frames' in case you process the pixel shift file in RawTherapee ;-)

Here are two PS images from a meetup in Laguna Beach last night

The Blue Laguna

La Luna

One thing I noticed on the moon shot in particular are the green artifacts. as the shutter speed was 1/80th of a sec, I have trouble beleiving that they were caused by the moon moving in that time.I suspect possible tripod vibration. Any other ideas what can cause that?

I think he is saying that he set manual mode with an exposure time of 5 seconds, pixel shift, and whatever aperture and then manually triggered his soft box after each exposure. You can tell that each exposure is done because an image flashes on the back LCD after each one. Since you have 5 seconds with each exposure, there is plenty of time for a flash to recharge and to re-trigger it.

1) set the ISO and aperture that you want
2) set a very long shutter time (e.g., 5 seconds)
3) hit the shutter button

4) wait a tiny amount of time for the shutter to open for the next frame
5) trigger the flash manually
6) when an intermediate frame (#1 through 3) show on the LCD back panel go to step 4

7) DONE!

Notes:
A) ambient lighting needs to be low enough so that it doesn't overpower the scene during the long shutter time.
B) shutter time needs to be long enough (or flash power low enough) to have the flash fully recharged for each frame.
C) If you have trouble with the first frame having a different brightness than frames 2, 3, & 4, try triggering the flash about one shutter time BEFORE starting the series
D) avoid moving or touching the flash which would shift the shadows and cause artifacts.
Thank you both. Hope to try it this weekend.

But with PS you take four exposures, and the entire sequence takes roughly a second. So the moon is not allowed to move one pixel during that second.
Also air movement can/will distort the moon between shoots unless you have perfect conditions.

Nice one Rondec!

Elsa Spath Clematis at dusk, blue light time. Center of clematis posted above is the second one down in this shot. The flower on top had not opened
when that stack was taken. 200mm, f22, ISO 100, 1/4.
