Detailed Information Playback Mode

Hi,
Maybe a dumb question, as I am still learning, but any input is appreciated.

I am a new owner of a K-1 and was reviewing some recent shots in Playback Mode with the Detailed Information selected.

I was shooting in both AF-S (with focus priority selected) and in AF-C. The Active Area was set for Auto-33.

In Playback Mode on the right hand side of the screen Detailed Information shows the focus grid. In the majority of the shots the utilized active focus squares are hi lighted in red...however in many shots (taken in AF-S and AF-C) there are no red squares hi lighted . Some of these shots were actually out of focus but some seem to be focused properly...and AF-S/Focus Priority should not release shutter until focus is achieved...so I am confused as to what the empty focus area grid means...does it mean no areas were chosen or they all were? or something else? I'm confused.

Thanks in advance for any help.

The points should show up for all your shots, with active points in light gray and confirmed points in red. They even show up for live view multi-point mode.

If there are none in red it should mean that no point were confirming focus at the time the image was captured. But you're right- for AF.S mode, that doesn't make much sense!

Thanks Adam,
I just went through all the pics I've taken to date...every shot shows red used focus points until the other day when I used my FA 100 2.8 macro. On that day out of 138 shots, 84 show red focus points and 54 show none. I am going to keep shooting with it and see if I can figure out what the issue might be...there doesn't seem to be a correlation between in focus/out of focus shots and showing red or not. Weird.

A suggestion: drop a few of the images in question on top of EXIFTOOL, and see what the image EXIF reports about the focus:
