As much as I enjoy shooting in full manual in my studio, I also enjoy shooting in PTTL when I'm taking quick pictures, at family events, when my kids are playing, etc. The two are not mutually exclusive. Also, when I lend my camera to someone else, I cannot expect them to be familiar with manual exposure. Not in this day and age.
Wedding photographers also mostly prefer TTL.
For people interested in a cheap but apparently good PTTL flash supporting HSS and apparently wireless PTTL, the Chinese company Shanny just released a flash (SG600 I think) which appears to fit all the requirements, for about 120$. I've heard good things about this flash on Nikon mount.
