K-1 wireless flash

Hi guys,

Just got my k-1 and also a METZ 52 AF-1 Flash. My concern is that I don´t see on the k-1 menu how to configure remote wireless flash. Does K-1 has this option?

I'm not the one to ask but maybe a better place would be the K1 specific forum at Pentax K-1 - PentaxForums.com if anyone knows they should

pg 111 in the manual covers it

Wireless flash

*6 Multiple AF540FGZ, AF540FGZ II, AF360FGZ, or AF360FGZ II units
are required

By using two or more external flashes (AF540FGZ,
AF540FGZ II, AF360FGZ, or AF360FGZ II), you can use the
wireless mode to shoot in P-TTL flash mode without
connecting the flash units with a cord. In this case, set the
camera channel on the external flashes

I'm not an expert in this area. But as far as I can see K1 doesn't have a flash controller. So you need at least two P-TTL flashes. The one you put on the K-1 must have master and/or controller capabilities the other must be usable as Slave. No remote configuration via K-1. You have to set parameters directly on the flashes. Another option is to use compatible radio triggers that work with METZ 52 AF-1.

Welcome to the forum, I'm sure your Metz will offer the same dedication levels as propriety flashguns, but you should check the manual for settings.

The Metz 52 is a P-TTL flash and it does support wireless shooting. All you need to do is set the flash itself to wireless master or control (using the buttons on the flash), then your off-camera flash to wireless slave and you'll be good to go.

Consult the flash manual for the exact steps (see section 9.1).

In case it isn't obvious, you do need two flashes for wireless functionality, since the K-1 doesn't have an on-board flash

Also good to know is that the P-TTL only works in Crop mode for the time beeing. They say Metz is working on the problem... I hope so.

Completely unrelated to the Metz, but I noticed that the K-1 does not work with high speed sync on my (old) sigma 500 whatever flash. Works fine on my K-5iis. I guess in addition to the different mount, they messed with how flashes work too?

Yes. The 500s dont work. Some can be re chiped by sigma, but some - like mine - cant be due to the firing circuit. Says Sigma.
Sigma UK though will sell you a new flash at a dicounted rate in exchange for your old one.
These prices are cheaper than SRS prices. But not a great deal cheaper.

P-TTL with the Metz 52 AF-1 works fine in full-frame mode.
I have about 800 52-AF1 and K-1 in FF P-TTL mode flash images to prove it.

You just have to make sure the Metz is set for FF using the right Metz shooting format adjustment ('Zoom Size') setting, if memory serves.

Sorry, I was referring to the advisory regarding some Sigma lenses damaging the mount area and needing a modification.

I have tried different settings but it still gives me wrong output when in FF mode.

I also don't realize any problems using the Metz 52 AF-1 with K-1 in FF mode on camera. Unfortunately I can't test wireless operation cause I don't own a second wireless capable P-TTL flash.
