K3, K3ii> K1

I only want to know one question: would you trade up from a K3, K3ii to the K1 for only better autofocus? I already know it is a better camera but would like to know if the trade up be worth it. (not just tracking but all autofocus)

thanks

Randy

I did. But it really depends on what you value in a camera. If the improvements on the K-1 don't do anything to help your photography, then its probably not worth it.

I switched from the K-3. If the only thing I was getting was the delta in autofocus, probably not worth plunking down almost $2k. Of course, you get a lot more than improved autofocus and I'm glad I switched.

I certainly traded up but the AF in the k-3II was already (for what I shoot) good enough for me. So if that was the only factor, no I would not have traded up. However, the AF is slightly better than the K-3II and there is a whole laundry list of other reasons to move up.

No.
I had other reasons to get the K-1, but just for AF? The next APS-C flagship will likely match the K-1.

(note that, as I don't own a K-3 series camera, I can't confirm the AF improvements at all).

From K-3II, I can't see any reason to switch except possibly for astro. Otherwise, I'd rather wait a bit for a bigger improvement.

That would not be my rational and if I buy a K-1, it will be in addition to my K-3.

AF isn't much improved in the K-1 over the K-3. I've got both cameras.

If you don't need a 35mm equivalent sensor I'd hang on for the K-3 Mark 3. If Pentax haven't raised their AF game to match the competition by that iteration I'm not sure where it all goes for them. It does need sorting out, not by that much, but enough.

Rest of the K-1's perfect, bar a few minor subjective observations.

As someone that used to own the K-3II and now owns the K-1, I would say nope. In fact, I like the higher fps of the K-3II and the fact that the AF points cover a larger area (relatively speaking of course).

I can't answer the question about k3/k3ii, but a good rule of thumb for technology upgrades is this:

Does your current hardware/tools do what you want/need them to-do?

If yes, then it's probably not worth it from a purely objective pov.

If all you want is a shiny new toy, go for it. That's a perfectly legitimate reason. Just don't expect it to be world changing.

I used a K-3 then a K-3II and I now have a K-1. I bought the K-1 for other reasons, not better AF.

If all I had wanted was better AF, I would have waited for the next APS-C flagship.

Exactly what I did, keep the K-3 as a back-up DSLR which teams up nicely with the K-1.

I started with a K-30, swapped it for a K-3 II, then added the K-1.
I mainly shoot birds and for the conditions I shoot in quite a lot of the time, relatively high ISO is necessary, and the K-1 really delivers over the K-3 II in this area.
I have also found that the AF of the K-1 is significantly better than the K-3 II, so whilst better AF wasn't my primary reason it is probably worth having the K-1 just for that, for the way I use it.

Cheers,
Terry

I haven't properly tested this, but my K-1 seems faster and more accurate.
