Sigma 28 1.8 macro vs. 31 limited on K 1

Hi, I'm just about ready to buy one or two lenses after a couple eBay sales and I was wondering if anyone has compared these two lenses. I'm leaning towards the limited for size and reputation, but the Sigma looks like a bargain.

You can try renting them from I've been thinking about the 31 and the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art for my K-1 for a while now and couldn't decide so I have the Sigma for 5 days now. I will try the Pentax 31mm next month and then make my decision.

Thanks, yes, I think I'll rent the 31 at least. Might even buy it from them using their purchase credit program.

Forget about the f1.8 Sigmas.
Yes, that means the 20, 24, 28mms.

They are not good on the edges (esp on FF) even stopped down.

The FA31ltd on the other hand is excellent.

You can't go wrong with the 31. The higher cost is definitely worth it.

Although it seems like you are leaning towards the 31, I thought I'd post these taken with the Sigma 28/1.8 EX DG. Not on a K-1 but it may still help you with your decision.

FYI, although the Sigma is a 1.8 it registers in the camera as 1.7. That was the case on a K-50 and K-S2.

Shot RAW on K-S2 no PP.

The Sigma has very good close focusing abilities. It is not a true "1:1" macro, but it is a lot more versatile than the FA 31/1.8.

On the other hand, the FA 31/1.8 is a lot more compact, beautifully built, and has an unrivalled out-of-focus rendering.

I have both but haven't tried the Sigma 28/1.8 on FF yet.

I've seen that photozone complains about the extreme borders but Klaus also reports a nervous bokeh and a wobbling inner lens tube. I have never experienced either of these problems. I wonder whether Klaus' copy was OK.
