I think that is compatible with what you just said.
Exactly, many pros who actually rely on photography for their income, can't afford that kind of specialty gear. The last two 1Dx guys I've seen were big income guys. MY last friend who made his income from photography, (I have a lot of acquaintances I see over and over again shooting out in the park etc.) but this guy's wife was friends with my wife, we went to each other's houses for dinner. Photography was an accidental common interest, we would have been friends without him shooting Pentax. For the last ten years hundred if not thousands of people on this forum have told me Pentax isn't good enough for weddings. I think of this man and his images, and I always think, "no that's not it, you aren't good enough for Pentax, that's the thing here" I don't say it, no point in getting all insulting, Needing to have the absolute best, most expensive piece of equipment to get the job done doesn't make you a better photographer. Knowing how to get the job done is what makes you a better photographer.

This man got kick ass images from his K-10D, and commanded a good price for his services, had his own bricks and mortar studio and for the most part seemed completely un-interested in the kind of gear debates that rage here endlessly.

If you have something that gets you the results you want, endless speculation about something else being "better" is a waste of time. And I've seen the same attitude from working pros shooting Canon and Nikon as well. I think the bells and whistles type of advertising is much more appealing to people who don't have good handle on what they are doing.

Actually, Norm, I think that's best response I've seen to the anti-Pentax snobs. I see nothing insulting in it. It's merely proffering an alternate possibility as to why they have issues with Pentax.

There have been quite a few Pentax users who have said the same thing an Tony. I have read post by many, many Pentax users insisting that Pentax needed to focus on APS-C and not build a FF.

I'll bet that Ricoh spent at least a dollar or two more on market research than Tony and those Pentax users spent.

Likely true, but their story, published I believe on the K-1 special site, is they had a chance meeting at a show in Europe with a Pentax enthusiast who convinced them they should make a FF for Pentaxians.

True, but I see some of those same people who insisted Ricoh didn't need a FF and that ASP-C was good enough, not criticizing Tony for saying the exact same thing.

Pentax have spent years missing the opportunity to really take APS-C where it deserves to go. Going FF doesn't seem to have affected that as Pentax showed no signs of rectifying even obvious faults in their system well before the real prospect of FF came along.

Here we are in 2016 and still without a DA 35/1.4 or DA 23/2 and still with slow and continually-failing SDM motors in supposedly "pro" grade lenses.

That's right. For years and years Pentax have failed to relegate APS-C to cheap entry cameras or highly-specialised sports cameras, and instead treated it as flagship technology.

I'm very glad they corrected their course before the market made all decisions for them.

As for the lenses, Ricoh has a roadmap full of new lens releases. We'll see them soon enough. These are great times for Pentaxians.

It still remains to be seen, can Pentax even build the type of AF system that would take them to the next level in AF operation. You'd think by now they would have reverse engineered someone else's faster focusing technology and tracking technology. It's 4 years now since they claimed better AF was the new priority. Where they are is disappointing. Unless you consider being where Nikon was 4 years ago progress. Since then the Nikon D500 has come out, and no one is even saying AF is priority any more. They are a hard company to figure out sometimes.

If we knew what it cost to develop the current AF sensor and the related algorithms, and what it would cost to develop their replacements (and to develop a separate sensor optimized for the FF image circle and viewfinder) we might better understand why they re-use the current technology. This might be a case where the small market share / low volume actually holds Pentax back.

I think it was rather like this:
Once upon a time, the K-mount digital FF was also known as "the Kingdom of Far, Far Away".

He made them an offer they couldn't refuse? Was he Italian?

Yes. Part of it has to do with their financial situation over the past 10 years, but there is no doubt that they have fallen behind in a few key areas and failed to capitalize on the opportunities that they have had. Fuji jumped into the market and surpassed Pentax in just a few short years. Pentax could be where Fuji is today if they would have had the innovation and marketing. Its not to late for Ricoh to release a K-mount mirrorless body based on the LX design with a high quality EVF. All of the manual K glass shooters would love it and with on-sensor PDAF the modern AF glass would still work very well. The technology is finally here to make it a viable option.

My bet is on average the amateurs have more cash than the Pros. Old guys like me quite often have funds saved over a lifetime and few expenses. Pros are often struggling to meet the next deadline and pay the bills.
