Is there anyone that doesn't have the white dots? More or less.
I currently do not have any white dots in my K-1. I had to send it twice to Precision Camera and in the second time they replaced the entire sensor (SR block). After that the white dot problem is gone for good.

As far as I know, the White Dot problem is sensor dependent.

How long exposure times do you use in you low light photography? Do you use Long Exposure Noise reduction?
"Long Exposure Noise Reduction" is the one that takes a dark frame after every image? I always keep that off to minimize downtime between shots. My photo format is raw DNG. Initial processing is always with Lightroom. Either my camera doesn't have the dots, or my workflow hides them.

Exposure lengths vary:

For star trails, I usually use 30 second exposures, shutter mode is continuous high, and a locking shutter release cable. That minimizes delays between each photo. The K-1 can do much longer than 30 seconds but then I have to shift to Bulb mode rather than Manual. 30 seconds also prevents too bright a sky background when there is light pollution, and aircraft trails are easier to fix with short expsoures.

When I was visiting Devils Tower last summer, I was free from both light pollution and air traffic. I went as long as 20 minute exposures for star trails. Some minor hot pixels at 20 minutes, but they are single pixels not large white dots that others reported:

First sample below is 20 second ISO 6400, second sample is 1200 seconds (20 minutes) ISO 200:

Why not use the Continuous Shooting mode on yout K-1? Seems to be tailormade to minimze time between exposures.

I don't see white dots in exposures under 1m (at least I don't believe i do) with NR off. Also shooting stars this winter showed that I don't get white dots at all with fairly long exposures with NR off. Last summer I had issues with 2-3m exposures with NR off and whatever iso I tried. Had to use the NR, which doubled my exposures and annoyed me a bit.

off topic - why can't we get LiveComp mode like in Olympus bodies, star trails are a breeze in that thing

Hello there,

I've taken a multiple exposure star trail some days ago (60*30s shot @800 iso, RAW, average merge with in camera intervalometer), and i'm seeing lots of colored dots (white if i disable the default color noise reduction under LR),

I'm wondering if my unit is affected by the problem ?

please check the file here (100% crop, pushed +2EV in post, no other settings applied) https://www.flickr.com/gp/97751163@N03/87zU61

by the way i've done the top bar test and i see no problem.

Thx in advance.

Unfortunately, you have the same issue...

So, it's not every k-1 that will do that under that exact same shooting condition ?

Do you think it worth the effort to send it for repair ?

It's sensor dependent. I have send mine for repair to France (I live in Bulgaria). They claim that they have changed the sensor. No difference after the repair, but it cost me nothing, so you better try your luck...

I wonder if the "upgrade to K-1II" that Ricoh will do until September will fix something for the "white dot problem"... Will the Accelerator Unit remove the "white dots" as a noise reduction system that it is?

Would be a nice test to see. Although I wonder if it also "eats" faint stars.

As if every faint star needs to be in your picture. You can probably afford to leave a few out. They do have telescope for this kind of thing.

K1 II and white dot issue

Has anyone tested really long exposures on the K1 II to see if this also suffers the white dot issue?

Mine does not. I posted earlier some examples and they are super clean. 5-8min easily without LENR. I cannot say for sure it is the accelerator doing it but there is noticeable difference in a good way. And, if it is the accelerator, then it has other triggering mechanisms than pure ISO setting.
