What kind of improvements?
I was only looking after the electronic shutter and crop mode settings; if there are subtler improvements (other than what they specify), we'll discover them - perhaps - on our own cameras, after the 29th.

How did the electronic shutter work? Fully electronic or only first curtain?

I must say I didn't try it... just browsed the menus to see how it can be set (since I'm a week away from installing it on my camera).
I guess it's something to try tomorrow, and report back here. But my supposition is that it's a full electronic shutter.

I can feel something at the end of the exposure, but the gentleman at the Ricoh 's stand told me it must be the SR, and that it's full electronic shutter.

Okay thanks for testing it out. SR causes a mild "clunk" after exposure yes. And, if you still have access to the demo...does it work with multi-exposure?

Sorry, I didn't test with multiple exposures. But, have a little patience, we'll install the new firmware on our cameras after 29.

I'll test then the full electronic shutter thing, too.

I shot the camera with no lens attached so I could see into the mount and onto the sensor. The physical shutter does move and that is what you hear (in addition to SR)
Anyhow it is pretty silent.

Dear Pentax/Ricoh:

This update seems major. Now that you have spent the big bucks adding major capabilities via firmware to our beloved K-1, please spend the pennies and issue an updated manual, in pdf, we will download and print if necessary.

Please add the full explanation of the green button, instead of making it the mystery button, as I understand you skipped some features since the K-5 manual.

Sincerely,

Pentax fan

Hey guys and gals, sorry for the next newb-ish question: I see the Electronic Shutter feature to be introduced is for the Live View. Do we already have this for the Optical viewfinder, perhaps through an option, or is this not possible?

Thank you

You will have to configure the green button to TV-SHIFT when in M-Mode. Page 99 in the manual. Well, these new manuals really suck. Download the one for K-5 and read more on the subject. I.E Go to menu CAMERA-symbol and tab 5. Find E-dial customization. Find M-mode EDIT Green Button behavior to Tv-Shift. Test again.

You are not supposed to press Green button when bracketting. You only need to adjust it's behaviour. Bracketing will follow how the green button is configured...

Do you understand? I try to be as clear as possible but I see that there might be some missunderstanding going on. That is why I prefer to say, Please read the manual but now I see it is no longer in the manual. Old knowledge passed down by the generations...
This is not n the K-1 manual ??
That is a really bad thing.

One of the first things I changed on the camera is green button behavior to Tv-Shift. I don't really bracket as much as I used to.. DR in a carefully exposed single image is usually enough! I am more likely to now focus bracket for stacking.

With regard to reading the manual, I recommend stepping through all menu options in the camera firmware. This can be fun and useful.

I'm pretty excited about this update-- especially the square, 1:1 crop frame. I almost never leave a photo in the 2:3 aspect ratio that all my cameras use. And I have despaired of finding the ratio I want most, 4:3. The 2:3 shape I call "accidental format," just something Leica came up with in the dark ages to adapt movie film to a stills camera. The 4:3 shape works better for me in most situations, especially vertical composition. If I want something wider than that, 16:9 is usually my choice. And nothing beats the power of an assymetrically balanced composition within a rigidly static square.

Yes, anyone can crop to these shapes in post, but it's very helpful to have the frame lines to show you how things will turn out.

Just tested 1.3. It is First curtain ES only AND so does not work with multiexposures. They screwed this one up. Why not implement fully electronic for multiexposures? It already works for PS and would significantly extend shutter lifespan.

? They do declare multi-exposure support in the v1.3 firmware info PDF...

ES is available for the first multi-exposure option, but not the second ME option (where you have shooting speed options), and is available again for the 3rd ME option (with self-timer) and the 4th ME option (with remote).

Whoa...that is messed up then. Because I mean shooting 100 exposure series with continuous shooting. So the 2nd option...where it would really be useful. One purpose is to forget ND filter for 15-30 and alike.

Well, not necessarily 'messed up'. Just a complex implementation of the idea.

There is probably some engineering logic to how they have turned ES on here, turned it off there, linked it to some shooting modes and not others, etc etc. Ricoh should write a small guide to all the ES parameters, and why they made the ES work the way it does.
