If I am going to invest CA$10,000 in a new Pentax system—camera body, the compulsory triad of lenses plus macro, flash, etc.—I'd really, I mean REALLY, like to know that the K-1 has done well enough to get Tamron and Sigma to start making lenses for it and Ricoh to continue to invest in it. Does anyone really know or is this all just speculation?
Polaris has announced that they are discontinuing their VICTORY line of motorcycles. How would you feel if you were excited about the $15,000 investment you just made in your new Victory Motorcycle just to find out that, oops, your bike, heck the whole brand, is being discontinued. A complete camera system costs almost as much, at least in Canadian pseudo-dollars. And, if it's discontinued the resale will be zilch! I don't know about you but if I am going to invest that much in a new Pentax system I want to ride into the future with full confidence that it will not only be there but it will be supported by Ricoh and third party manufactures with the offering of new flash and lens choices. I love Pentax, but at this point in time I am far from having that kind of confidence.
Looking at a few items around the web, Pentax is just not doing well enough yet. I personally wonder if Pentax sold every camera they are capable of producing, if it would be enough to get them back into the top 5, or high enough volume to interest Sigma or Tamron. The company has learned to survive small, and given their market share, that's what is keeping them alive.
Someone once posted that internal documents suggested it wold cost Ricoh 1.6 billion to get back on a level playing field with Canon and Nikon. At the time they decided to pass, there is no indication they've changed their minds.
If memory serves me well, there are close to 100 lenses currently available from Pentax. If that's not good enough, you probably need to buy something else.
Pentax is what it is. If something new comes out, it's not likely to be exactly what you want.
Pentax markets the K-1 as a field camera. There's not a lot of use for flashes in most of the fields I've been in.
Sometimes it pays to listen to the marketing people.
