HSS With Pentax K-1+Cactus V6ii and Godox 360

Had the pleasure of working with a beautiful young lady last week, so I decided to try out some shots using HSS with the K-1+Cactus V6ii and the Godox 360. Three things I learned from the shoot were expose for the background, adjust the power of the flash to match the back ground exposure and use contrast detection AF (live view).

All photos shot wtih FA* 85mm f1.4.

Very good question. I contacted Adorama about a month ago and they still didn't have an update on when it would be available.

Ooh, I assume "HSS" is for Hot Super Sweetie.

Thanks for sharing!

I see some advanced hand modelling. Did she do that on her own or did you instruct her?

Shouldn't be that hard.

What Godox flashes are you using?

There are two different approaches with flashes that have a different native radio trigger system:
  1. One V6II on the camera as an "HSS enabler". Fwbigd used this approach. Just choose the "flash system" depending on what camera system the Godox trigger was made for. Choose "MANUAL" for a simple trigger like the FT16. Put the trigger on top of the V6II.
  2. One V6II on the camera and another V6II as a receiver attached to the flash/strobe. If the flash/strobe does not have an ISO hot-shoe foot then you'll need a sync-cable (audio cable with 3.5mm plugs will do). This latter approach would support turning individual lights on and off with the V6II on the camera and you don't have a "tower of triggers".
Make sure to update the firmware on your V6II to the latest version. The initial firmware version was a bit buggy and one of the bugs required the selection of the "Nikon" flash profile for the on-camera V6II to make a trigger-on-trigger solution (1. above) work when the trigger was simple, like the FT16.

P.S.: Forgot to mention that you have to engage HSS mode on your Godox flash/strobe manually.

Thanks fwbigd,

I would love to know more about what you did here. What mode was the camera in? Why did you choose to to use Live View?

So, I have been following information on the new Cactus triggers, but not closely. I know that the Cactus V6 ii have two HSS modes, one that just fires the flash at full power, and another that works differently. Does it actually work like a Pentax P-TTL flash, or are you able to set the power output? What I would love to be able to do is use my Camera in AV mode as I usually do, and be able to adjust flash power manually with shutter speeds of faster than 1/200th.

The Pentax FA* 85mm f/1.4 is a legacy lens that is no longer in production but of course still usable on a modern Pentax DSLR.

The V6II is a manual trigger. You can control up to four groups, each having its individual power level that you control manually (using a dial).

There is no P-TTL support other than HSS (for supported flashes), and "P-TTL pass-through" to allow having a V6II sandwiched between a camera and an on-camera flash, without losing the P-TTL features of the on-camera flash.

You can do that with the V6II, as long as you are using any of supported flashes (which need not be from Pentax).

I'm pretty sure that you'll have to manually engage HSS on the AD360. I understand there is some button combination to do that.

Thanks Class A, has anyone done a write up or video explaining the use of the Cactus V6 ii for HSS with Pentax?

I notice on the Cactus site that for the V6 is lists the Nikon SB-28 as supported, but for the V6 ii it does not. Is that correct?

I don't know, but there isn't much to it anyhow.

The V6II has an auto-detect mode so if you put it on a Pentax, it will automatically set the flash system to "Pentax". With an RF60 as an off-camera flash, you can first away immediately, with other flashes you may have to select their profile on the V6II receiver first. However most flashes will be auto-detected by a V6II receiver, so normally it should just be "plug and play".

Only when you start using strobes, or flashes with proprietary triggering systems that are not directly supported by the V6II, it gets more involved. There are a couple of not too complicated workarounds for such situations, but as I said for supported flashes using HSS is really simple.

Yes, that's correct.

The SB-28 only supports analogue TTL. The V6 supports analogue TTL but the V6II does not.

Cactus said they will release a firmware updated for the V6 in October that will make the V6 compatible with the V6II. You'll then be able to fire an SB-28 sitting on a V6 by using a V6II transmitter. However, HSS will not be supported in this configuration. Only normal shooting and PowerSync.
