Any advice for new K-1 owner when you first receive the camera?

For an upcoming K-1 owner with 28-105mm, knowing what you know now, what would you have done when you first got your camera? Maybe even before taking the first shot?

1. set up language, city, time/date, color, etc.
2. check GPS can go to green.
3. input copyright owner/photographer?
4. adjust diopter
5. ...
6. make the first shot?
7. check manufacturing date, shutter count?
8. what else?
when to install new firmware?
Any detailed info that you think a newcomer may miss would be appreciated.

Thanks for your timely advice,
Gilbert

Hi,
Welcome and congrads on your new camera! I have one and it took me a little bit to get used to it, and see how all the features work.

I would...
*Update the firmware, it's easy!
*Get fast sandisk cards extreme pro, they work good for me.
*Change the autofocus default setting to shutter priority. I would practice with the auto focus so you know what to expect, and how to take full advantage of the different settings, and the way they work. Lots of people use back button focus, it's handy!

Use it everyday to get used to it!

**** And the best of all be prepared for some fantastic pictures!!!!

I'd set a couple of user modes with favourite shooting options - there's an awful lot you can forget to change, so it's good to have a more or two you're comfortable with and you know has everything the way you want it when you turn on - and it gets you used to all the customisability

If the OP dont mind Ill ask a question as Im a new owner of the K1 as well.

I havent found the answer yet, I'd like to know if it's possible to have the focus point for AF illuminated as soon as I press the AF back button. In dark environment its very difficult to see the black dot especially when you dont use the AF central point. I often use Selective one dot.
So far the AF dot is highlighted when the focus is confirmed, I may have missed something !

1. Read the manual whilst the battery is on charge.
2. Do camera information and copyright set up.
3. Update to Firmware 1.4.
4. Adjust dioptre and check lens for focus accuracy.
5. Adjust lens for front/back focus if relevant.
6. Why are we still here? Take some photos.
7. Download photos to your computer.
8. Realise you need to buy a bigger/faster computer.
9. Re-read the manual on how to personalise camera set up.

It's a good bit of kit, have fun and enjoy it.

Make sure the camera is set to shoot in raw, to both cards (or whatever your preference is). Set 'Memory' to forget only the settings you want it to forget on power off. I like back-button AF, so I set that up right away.

Set the UI colour? Customise the quick menu?

Not that I have found. I agree the ultra thin lines are difficult to see in the dark. I never had such problems on prior models.
But momentarily press the AF Mode button on the side of the camera and the entire grid will light up.

For the OP;
I would install Firmware before anything else.
Then customize the controls. But I have been used to specific customizations over the past 10+ years. So you may be happy with the defaults.

Step 1. Put the battery on the charger. Charging will take forever.
Step 2. Put the K-1 back in the box.
Step 3. Read the manual. Reading the manual will take forever.

It depends? My battery showed up more than half-full, plus I had the battery grip, plus a spare battery, so I think if OP has spare batteries, they should get started right away.

Don't:"Hmm, Now I can use that old 100-300 Sigma lens. Three hundred at full frame!". This is how I got my Sigma deep scratch on the body. I do not mind the scratch, but the feeling of stupidity still lingers, since I already read about Sigma lens before.

Go into the 1st menu (Phase Detection AF) and take it out of "AUTO" for every setting. Put the camera on focus priority. Turn AF Hold completely off.
