K-1 and DFA 70-200 are an awesome low light action combo!

Picked up the 70-200 just 6 days before it finally goes on sale at B&H

But I had a horse show to shoot and in an indoor poorly lit arena. I was wondering whether this lens would really be worth the $, and I can now say it absolutely delivered. Required a slight focus adjust (+2) out of the box, but AF seems very fast and accurate with this combo, it doesn't hunt much at all even in poor light.

Here's a sample of a shot at 6400 ISO and F3.2 at 1/800s. Never thought I'd get usable shots at 6400ISO! This is with just a little NR applied in Lightroom.

[Note that for equestrian photographer purposes this is not a good enough shot, as the horses legs are not even so not good enough for the missus, but photographically I like it anyway]

The 70-200 also doubles as my new portrait lens:

You can call customer service and get a price adjustment. Heck, I got one when a lens I bought just days before went on sale at Adorama (or I bought from Adorama and B&H put it on sale).

I used the same combination for show jumping in September, outdoors and further away. Again, I found focus fast and accurate. Great lens.

Suspicions confirmed. I definitely want a K-1 with a 24-70 now.

That first shot is awesome.

70-200, not 24-70.

Oh I know... but the aperture is the same speed.... I just started a thread about this very subject a while back (high ISO performance)...

If it will do that on the 70-200 it will do fine with the 24-70.

Ah - good old Hunt Horse arena. I've shot there many times and was wondering how the k-1 / 70-200 combo would work. Nice shot in VERY challenging lighting conditions. Have you photographed any Cowboy Mounted Shooting there? One coming up February 18-19, 2017. I am going to try and make that one and give the camera & lens a good workout. Here is a so-so image from my k-3 / 70-200 combo so you can see what I will be trying to capture with the k-1! Definitely a challenge - natural light+fluorescent light+mercury vapor(?), dark animals moving quickly on dark dirt surface amongst residual smoke from black powder being ignited! You know - the easy stuff! LOL!

I remember the first shots from advertisements of Kodak T-Max 3200 - the photo magazine shotz a running horse with the then new Nikon F-801 that alowed 1/8000s.
Now 6400 is easily usable :-)

I remember pushing TMZ to ISO 12800 and was called insane.
