How soon will we see the successor to the K-1?

Any word if we will see the next Pentax Full Frame by years end? Any speculation on the improvements it will feature over the K-1?

Don't even think about it. We've got a good 3 years at least. Go read the CP+ interview PF just conducted (on the front page of this site). Ricoh Imaging states the K-1 will be on the market for quite some time.

A better question would be How soon until we get an array of updated D-FA primes and the telezoom?

I say minimum 3 to 4 years. But i wouldn't mind to see K-2 with 24mp sensor in 2018.

Photokina 2020 would be my guess.

I'd think not this year and probably an announcement last quarter next year (but no actual camera on sale till later 2019 or early 2020).

I'd only just starting to learn what the K1 can do, so I certainly don't mind waiting till 2020.

PhotoKina 2017 may be too early for a full K-1 replacement to be announced, but some minor K-1 revision may be possible, I guess, depending on the work Ricoh may be doing in the lab. Kind of Nikon D800 vs D810, D600 vs D610, K-5 vs K-5II.

A Pentax 24MP FF would certainly be nice in 2017, with enhancements to SAFOX, video etc, tech which could then in turn be rolled into a K-1 replacement later on.

K-2 with 24mp sensor
What's the benefit of a 24mp sensor when the K-1 has a 36? Why would the successor have less pixels?

IIRC, when the pixels are larger, each gathers more photons within the same exposure duration and this has benefits for signal-to-noise ratio (and high ISO or very low light performance), all other things being equal. The trouble is that they rarely are - a modern 24MP camera, for example, has such superior signal processing and noise reduction algorithms (and hardware to back those up) that it crushes the low light performance of a DSLR with a 12MP sensor of the same size from five years ago.

That being said, I think the whole high/low pixel density mix business is for the Canon-Nikon-Sony trio, who up until now have had sufficient sales volume to maintain multiple full-frame bodies in the market and to deliver cameras dedicated to such specialist uses as sports only or low light only.

My guess... Not within the next couple of years.. but they can keep the K1 alive doing some nice software addons and good improvements.

I reckon 2020. Let our wallets enjoy long product cycles with more than just incremental improvements.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see a K-1s* in 2018 with slightly improved buffer clearance speed and AF just to keep turnover up. (*available in 3000 different colours)

I wish they'd look at my advanced grip idea to boost performance. A grip with a dedicated AF processor and other electronic gubbins to speed everything up.

I like it...a lot. So far I've been trying out my arsenal or lenses with the K-1. I like the high ISO performance, the the setting dial, function dial, HDR. The 28-105 is a great lens and pairs with the K-1 very well.

Photos...I'm not very computer literate, my kids have tried to show me how to transfer photos to websites....with no success. Their old dad just can't get the knack, it seems.

I don't have much interest in posting my photos on websites at this point, but I enjoy seeing some of the exceptional work of a lot of Pentaxians. A lot of the members are very, very good photographers.

Since the K1 came out not even a full year ago (11 months actually, released in April 2016), the next FF/replacement I see it coming out in about 2 1/2 to 3 years from now. The average "lifespan" of a FF Dslr before being replaced is roughly 4 years.
