He used a K-5 when he had AF issues. He wouldn't have had issues with a K-3.
The K-5II introduced a much better AF system and was already available that the time he changed systems, but he had already made up his mind.
Many regarded his very vocal "exit" that threw a lot of mud at Pentax as unprofessional. Not to mention that shooting with the K-5 for years; a camera that is supposedly not able to obtain proper focus, could be regarded as unprofessional.
We all know that even with a K-5 one can take sharp shots. The K-5 II, and later Pentax models, just made it a lot more hassle free, obviating the need to re-calibrate for different lighting conditions.
