Silver K-1 Limited

Here is an interesting dilemma I am having. I do not need a silver K-1 but I find myself drawn back to it again and again. Are others similarly haunted? I loved the look of my silver MX which i used for 25 years. That may be part of my desire but I have also loved the K-1. Maybe it is so special it might be something worth keeping in this silver form for a long time. Anyway, I am interested in learning whether others are similarly tempted and torn. I cannot really afford it but I do have the cash at hand. The Adorama listing on Amazon says they still have 15!

If I didn’t have a silver KP I definitely would have 2 K-1’s, Black and Silver.

The silver K-3 was the first one released and I jumped on it. Pentax waited too long to release the K-1 in silver, so I bought a black one. I can’t justify adding a second one - even it is is silver. That said, if I had an extra two grand... my silver K-3 is gorgeous!

Just go for it- it's a pretty good value to begin since the premium for the silver color is minimal.

I know that electronics normally depreciate, but a special version of Pentax's first ever full frame DSLR may prove to be a collector's item later down the road.

You did such a terrific job with that photo, I am afraid you may have just pushed him over the edge

You are making it hard, Sandy! Makes me regret selling my near perfect FA* 85.

Thank you - always happy to enable
For the record, it was taken with my black K-1 (and the Sigma 35/1.4 Art)

Yep, can relate 100 %. I too have been eying the Silver edition of the K1 and currently have the standard black version. It is tempting but waiting for that new 85mm 1.4 Star lens to come out.

What kept me from buying a silver version is that I already have a grip (payed the full price for it) for the K1 black. Otherwise, the silver package is actually a compelling for what is offered for the price.

Just to play the devil's advocate...if you can't really afford it, why torture yourself over a false aesthetic? It is sort of like fake wood grain in a car...it looks nice but you just spent how much extra for something that is not functional and is not genuine...or even worse, Toyota's fake hood air scoops.

Perhaps it's my age. I started photography in the 70's when silver was the norm on aluminum metal SLRs and the pro body was painted black on brass or titanium. (Entry level cameras were often satin chrome paint or black enamel over ABS plastic). Pros and amateurs all wanted the black because it was more exclusive AND it reduced reflections of itself while being more low key/less flashy. (Get the shot, not the attention.)

Now that everything is polycarbonate, silver is sort of a retro simulation of metal and brings attention to itself, and I find it a stroke of marketing genius that they can sell more cameras by offering a different color and call it "silver" or "chrome" or "platinum" when it's just enamel or painted polycarbonate.

With that said, life is short and if it makes you happy, indulge. But if it was me, I'd spend it on other things I couldn't afford, like travel expenses, the ultimate lens, great walking/hiking shoes, your last and best carbon-fiber tripod, etc, and create special images with your black K1.

Except it's not the same thing at all. fake would grain in a car is just about the ugliest thing possible while the silver K-1 is amazing

I'd say go for it, it's such a fantastic camera, whatever the colour it will serve you well.

I was haunted by it for about a millisecond, then I bought one.
