1.4X teleconverter

Good morning,

I am new to this forum. I have been a Pentaxian since I was 15. I have came back to photography few years ago and now I am the happy owner of a K-1 camera.

I would like to ask if anybody knows if the 1.4x teleconverter does work with the K-1. I have asked the same question to the Pentax official help center and it looks like they have no idea. B&H expert says no. Anyone has some experience?

Thanks

Michele

It work perfectly but with some lenses you will get some vignetting.

Because of the vignetting, I try and use the F 1.7x AF adapter with the K-1 where possible. It actually works really well and if auto focus is important I'll use it even on a K-1, as long as I will have cropping room on the final image.

I wouldn't use it on an image like this where I use the whole frame. It might be OK, it might not. If you have other alternatives it's better not to take the chance.

K-1, Tamron SP AF 300mm 2.8 and F 1.7x AF adapter.

To compare the F 1.7x AF adapter with the new 1.4x is kind of like comparing a T-Ford with a Ferrari when it comes to speed and usability. The new 1.4x gives you, for instance, full AF functionality, and full SR-functionality, i.e the correct focal length is displayed. It also gives you full weather sealing if you use a WR/AW-lens.

Do you want the whole frame or don't you? The 1.4 doesn't always give you the whole frame and the vignetting can be severe. It works great on a K-3 though. I carry them both in my walking pack. They both have their place.

A note for DA 1.4 TC users: the TC also works well in the K-1's [16MP] crop mode ...

The 1.4x converter is part of the DA series, which means it is only designed to cover the APS-C image circle. With some lenses it will cover the entire frame on the K-1 (I believe the DA* 200mm is one of them), but most won't. As others have pointed out, feature-wise it is compatible and it can certainly be used without any issues in crop mode.

It does vignette with the only two lenses I have where it makes sense to use it, the FA*300 and DFA100 Macro. It covers a more than just the APS-C frame, but I wouldn't buy it for use on the K-1. Hopefully Ricoh will decide to make a DFA TC at some point. Until then it's better to look for an older converter IMO, like the F Norm mentions.

Does the 1.4x HD Pentax-DA AF Rear Converter give much sharper results then the 1.7x F AF adapter ? lets say with the DA*300 on the K1? (regardless of of covering the hole frame in FF or of AF capabilities) Or is the difference in sharpness and contrast similar?

& Will both give better results in sharpness then using the bigma 50-500? Thanks in advance for any answer here.

They are both pretty sharp if you have a DA* quality lens or better. If you have older glass with a purple fringing problem, the F 1.7x obviously will magnify it more than the 1.4.

In my opinion the 1.7 on the 300 will be better than the 50-500 for IQ, but I don't own both so I can't give you a real comparison. Also, my favourite lens with the F 1.7x is the Tamron 300 because of it's really quick and easy one finger MF ring. With Pentax's quick shift lenses, using the F 1.7 is really awkward because of the clutch and long throw focus ring, as opposed to the very short throw of the Tamron.

Thanks for your answer, looking around for what lenses to use and or buy if I get the K-1.

I plan for the Irix 15mm and the Pentax WR 100mm macro ( instead of the FA 24-105) and I already have the FA 50mm 1.4, the DA*300 and the new 55-300mm. so for a 3 lens travel set the Irix, the 100mm and the 55-300 (even if only crop but its light and sharp) and for hikes the DA* plus the 1.7x and the Irix.

Thanks to all for sharing your experience. It looks like that considering the price it maybe better to wait and see if Ricoh will come out with a dedicated teleconverter

I now have the K1 and the K3ii. If the teleconverter is going on, I just use the K3ii.

The K1 and DA 300mm are a beautiful combination BTW, if you can deal with less reach.

I use the Pentax HD DA AF rear converter 1.4x AW almost all the time with the DFA 150-450 on both the K-3 II and the K-1.
It does vignette a very small amount on the K-1, but I don't think I've ever had more than a couple of shots that didn't need to be cropped for one reason or or another, so I don't consider the vignetting an issue worth worrying about.

Cheers,
Terry
