AF Assist light is not available with the AF540FGZ or AF360FGZ

I'm a bit dissapointed to find out that "AF Assist light is not available with the AF540FGZ or AF360FGZ" (K-1 operating manual page 110).
Who has an idea why this feature is missing at the K-1? Or is it just marketing to increase sales of the new II auto flash units?

And are there some workarounds to get the red AF assist light of the AF360-FGZ to work on the K-1?

In this thread i'd find the hint to page 110, but, it's now two years old.

I believe this started with the K-3II and is the behavior of all current-model Pentax dSLRs. This behavior was rather unusual at the time it surfaced, particularly since at least partial compatibility to legacy flash has been the rule within the limitations of the flash. The lack of Av mode for HSS noted in the link you provided makes sense and is long-standing. The K-5 only supported Tv and M, a restriction that goes back at least as far as the K10D.

I suspect that the newer flashes use an extension of the flash protocol for the assist lamp that is not programmed into the newer bodies, perhaps because the AF assist doubles as a modeling/fill light on the newer flashes. It is hard to tell.

As far as workarounds...I haven't heard of any.

Would be nice to have the choice of using either the flash or the build in light, the green assist light seems to get the job done however.

At first i thought my AF360FGZ is getting old. The green camera assist light isn't that good with long lenses and is way more showy than the decent red projection scale of the flash.

Which motor flashlights with red af assist light work on the K-1 with the af assist light?
What about (current )Sigma/Metz models?

Not the Metz 52 AF-1. Or the Yongnuo 585-EX.

But I remember seeing somewhere reports that the AF assist light has been known to work on the K-1 with some flashes when the camera is set to crop-mode. Figuring out Pentax flash protocols is apparently harder than it seems.

So Pentax don't know their own flash protocoll?
Or just forcing to get the new II flash?

Probably the latter.

I gave some thought to this some time ago when the question was first asked on this site and figured out a rational explanation that made sense at the time. Unfortunately, I have forgotten what it was.

No...memory is as bad now as it was 16 months ago. I did do a little research, however, and found a hit on pages one and 71 of the AF560FGZII manual regarding AF incompatibilities for the white LED on various camera models do to wavelength issues and how Sept 2013 and newer bodies did not have those problems. I suspect that SAFOX 12 is not as accommodating as SAFOX 11 and pre-2013 SAFOX X in that regard.
