Mark II High ISO testing for Milky Way Photography

My camera arrived last week and I went out to a location I had scouted before to take some shots.

Sadly due to a new mining complex, (or Secret Military Base, or UFO landing site) there was way too much light pollution. But I did take some shots at different ISO's to share.

I hope this is useful. Maybe it is, maybe it is not.

All images taken on the Pentax K-1 Mark II. Using a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 Lens.
I did some edits in Iighroom on the ISO6400 image then synced all the edits to the other images.
The only custom edit I did per image was the exposure as each one needed to be unique due to the changes in ISO

20 second shots at the selected ISO.

Images were cropped to about 1:1 for viewing noise.

ISO3200

ISO5000

ISO6400

ISO8000

ISO10000

[/url][

ISO12800

ISO16000

Here is the uncropped image at ISO8000. You can see the lovely light pollution to the east.

And for fun, this is a 20 image stack from ISO6400 at 15 seconds. Using Sequator.

Do you have some means, perhaps a picture taken with another camera, to 'take attendance' .... to make sure that that the Noise Reduction is not also 'star reduction'???

Looking at the uncropped and stacked images, you can see there is not a "Star Eater" here. Nice images. maybe one day soon it won't be raining, snowing or just cloudy and cold so I can get out in the yard and do some shooting.

Flickr provides BBCode snippets to facilitate sharing in compliance with their user agreement.* Find them under the share icon, then simply copy and paste.

Steve

* Shared images are supposed to be set-up as a link back to the originating page at Flickr. It is unlikely, but not unknown, to have Flickr block access if the back-link is not there.

All look pretty OK to me.

For the detail crops, seems like decent noise control past ISO 3200 in very low light, plus little apparent damage to key details ( ie 'lost stars') or NR detail smearing. Also good to see only a small amount of magenta cast at even the highest ISO.

Could you share 1 full resolution RAW file at ISO 6400-8000 for evaluation purposes? Thank you.

I do not have a K-1 but I do have my K-5. I am going out to another location on Saturday to take some images. I will take the K-5 to provide some comparisons. Not apples to apples but might help.

I did find the links. But did not include the back links. Will have to do that next time. Thanks.

Thoughts on how I could do that? Flickr would not do that so I would need to have the files located at some other location.

Google Drive is a popular solution as is DropBox. They and similar products allow placement of large files out on "The Cloud" for easy download.

I am particularly interested in this.
So will stacking 20 images be as good in IQ for the scene (ie. tree, grass, etc) compared to one long exposure shot for it?
Eg.
ISO3200, f8, 60s x20
vs
ISO100, f8, 8mins

So for Sequator, you mask out the ground and only stack and align the stars. I suppose you could stack the ground in PS and then blend the 2 images together. I have not tried that. II am very new to Sequator.

But tomorrow night I will be out at another location that is actually a lot better than my first location. So I will be trying a few different things.

A stack will be much better due to the noise being cancelled out in the merge. Magic!
