Video review of the Pentax K1 mkII

I've been watching his channel for a few months, dude is Pentax biased, but he think the mkII upgrade is disapointing.
I wish, like him that Pentax will release a firmware update that will include the new AF algorithm !

He makes the assumption that the focusing improvements are solely from the algorithm. Could it also be because the new processor crunches the AF data at higher speed?

I'm mainly looking forward to this improvement, so it's good to see it verified.

The new processor is between image sensor and prime IV. AF is being done By SAFOX and the AE sensor.

So slightly better iso performance and better autofocus.

Iso and noise is non linear, so any improvements will be in corner cases.

It would seem to be down to particular shooting style and priorities. If doing a lot of low light and/or moving subjects, sounds like the mark II is still a nice upgrade, but if you're always shooting flowers at ISO 100, then maybe not worth it for you. I did find it odd that in his final pixel shift shots of the little bear, he was at ISO 6400. That's too high in my mind for really seeing the differences in images. I feel those comparison shots should have been done at a much lower ISO to really see what the camera differences are.

I have noticed that the AF of the K-1 II is excellent when shooting birds in flight. I was out testing my K-1 II the day before yesterday. It was overcast, but when a hawk flew over, the camera recognized the bird almost instantaneously.

I have noticed also that the "SD Card slot 1" seems to eject the sd card easier/more than on the K-1 model.

Good news. I find the K1 quite bad for birds in flight. Looking forward to the upgrade.

When you already have an awesome FF dSLR, as in the K1 - which I own - it's going to be a hard road to travel if you don't improve on the basics. If you are *not* going to improve on the basics, how about a "bone" thrown our way and at least give us better video! Since the review above will alienate folks looking for meaningful improvements in the photography aspects...imagine someone like me hearing that 1080p/60 at 50mbs made it into the upgrade?!? Heck...tweak the 1080p/30 with some profiles or higher bit rate too! Nice review and pretty much what I was expecting.

I saw the video this morning, and it confirmed what I gathered from the promotional material. They are improvements, and they are meaningful. If it were a question of which camera to buy, MkI or II, you'd almost certainly buy the newest one. But, if I already had a MkI, I'm not sure that the feature set offered by the MkII makes a compelling case to upgrade. I imagine that I would be satisfied with either of the versions of the camera. I had initially planned to buy the MkII, to upgrade from my K3II, but the need isn't urgent. Pentax is making incremental changes to the model, and that's good for all of us for the future.

I just got back from shooting the RCAF Snowbirds at Canadian Forces Base Comox. While the jets were in flight I shot exclusively with my K1Mark II paired with an FA 300 f4.5. Haven't looked at all the images so far, but one thing was certain. The lens never lost focus as it has done frequently on both my K5 and K3MarkII. Focus felt very confident even when shooting moving jets at 1/2000 and 1/4000 sec.

Not much of an upgrade, as the vendor told me. For customers wanting a Pentax FF , the K1 II is the one to buy.

I think this reviewer missed the point on what Hand held pixel shift does. It's not for moving subjects, it's for movement in the shooters hands. Improved auto-focus...that's huge for most shooters. Now if it's worth upgrading your K-1 that's up to each individual shooter.

I guess I was hoping for the sort improvement seen with K-70 / K-P in high ISO. However from all the image comparisons I have seen so far there is very little difference between K-1 and K-1 II (maybe half a stop if that?). If it was a good solid 1+ stops then that would be reason enough to upgrade for me but I'm not seeing that from reviews so far. Also with hand held pixel shift thing, all the review samples I have seen so far there is virtually no improvement over regular handheld (certainly nothing like regular pixel shift) and in some cases worse.
So I'm a bit disappointed about that. Not sure if I will do the upgrade at this point. From a recent interview Ricoh were saying that the new AF algorithm was not because / dependent on the new hardware. Whether they the make it available to the K-1 or not is likely to be a strategic thing (I'm hoping that a few months down the track they will release to the K-1 too).

This is a crop of a shot I took with my k-1 II the other day. It was sort of breezy and overcast. It was my first day out of doors with the camera and my Pentax 70-200.
