Dynamic Pixel Shift - an improvement

Though I've had the K-1 II since Monday only got to try it out today, though only for a few photos. These are both shot RAW using the DFA 24-70, but processed JPEG out of the camera, been too busy today for anything else. Hope this answers some questions.

First, non-PS (handheld)

Second, Dynamic Pixel Shift (handheld)

Thanks for posting. I see an improvement of exposure in the second one.

I'm seeing an improvement with sharpness and colour. But yes the exposure is better on second shot too.

The pixel shifted image has less noise in the shadow.

Dynamic pixel shift provides more dynamic range for landscape, without the downside of needing a tripod.

Do you have access to both a K-1 and a K-1 mark II? If so, can you try to compare side by side, ISO 100 - 1 million? Same settings, same scene and raw of course.

Thanks, just wish it could've been more than a quick couple of test shots, but that's time allowed for. But today is lot's of time in the forest with the K-1 II and it's going to be sunny

I actually have both, but dropped the K-1 off yesterday at Advance Camera for a much needed cleaning along with a K2 & Spotmatic in for their 40-50 year check up & service. But not needing a tripod for PS is an advantage and does seem to work, which in itself an improvement over the K-1. The above comparison photos show much better detail at full resolution rather how they are when uploaded on to the forum. Will try to post photos linked to my Flicker account (which I need to start using anyway) which will show how good DPS really is. The main reason for getting the K-1II was for wildlife because of the reported upgraded AF & higher ISO to hopefully help deal with the usually dark cloudy weather here in the PNW. The DPS is actually a bonus that really does seem to deliver.

I’ve only shot about 20 examples of dynamic pixel shift and get about half keepers with better noise control and colors. Direct comparison with my existing K-1 or K-1 ii suggest that everything is basically the same after Raw development. Autofocus is definitely improved over the K-1. Tripod pixel shift development also appears to be “accelerated”.

Do you see a vast improvement in image stabilisation at low shutter speeds with the dynamic PS on the K-1ii that some have reported on the other forum (last two samples in the first post on that thread) ?

That's good to know as it's the main reason I got it, thanks

Haven't used it enough to really give a definite answer, it does seem to work as promised though.

Just got back, shot about 90% DPS with the DFA* 70-200. Just a quick look at the photos, the stabilization, even with hand holding such heavy lens seems to work just fine.

There does seem to be a little bit better resolution with DPS over non-PS for hand held shots, it's not much but it's there. All were shot with the DFA*70-200. Notice on the second set of photos, the DPS photo is 1600iso vs 400iso on the non-PS, yet the DPS still looks a little better. This is my 4th camera model that's capable of Pixel Shift (K-3II, K-1, KP, K-1II), so it's great to see this got worked out, just another cool little tool from Pentax

Non-PS 1/45s, f5.6 1600iso

DPS - same settings

Non-PS 1/90s f5.6 400iso

DPS 1/350s f5.6 1600iso

Has anyone tried the DPS for longer handheld exposures for night shots ?

Something in the range of 0.2 to 0.5 s handheld ?

And if so, what were the results compared to handheld non-DPS ?
