As others have said, they are just different cameras. Tons of different components and therefore it is hard to say why the K-1 weighs a tiny fraction more. Image stabilization certainly could be it, but truthfully the shutter mechanisms, chassis, and everything else about the cameras is different. It is more surprising that they are so close in size than that the Pentax is a tiny bit heavier.

On a brighter note, I have found that if I empty the change out of my pockets before I pick up my K-1, I have found that my overall body mass is less than if I was holding a D850 -- particularly when I have the FA 31 or FA 77 mounted.

(It is silly to consider the weight of a camera without a lens).

5 grams is less than irrelevant!
It is totally irrelevant - and we wouldn't be talking about it if reviewers hadn't noticed and used it as a negative.

I think a lot of it come down to psychology - we have a ball park expectation that bigger things are heavier than smaller things - so a D850 feels light for its size and therefore light and a K-1 feels heavy for its size, therefore heavy - it doesn't explain why people complain about the size of the K-1 (other than comparing with previous Pentax DSLRs or just wanting to find something to complain about), but I think it accounts for the weight issue to some extent

What is with all this of topic stuff about biased reviewers? I thought the question was speculation about why the K-1 weighs just a smidgeon more than a competitor's product that none of us can or want to afford. A few words come to mind..."Get" "over" "it".

Steve
Um...I want to afford the D850.

If you look at DxOMark scores, the K-1 tests nearly as well as the D850 at a fraction the cost!!

Me too - if I could afford the D850, then I could buy a couple more top notch Pentax lenses

5 grams is huge. If it were botulinum thats enough to kill 50 million people.
"Botulinum toxin
Scientists differ about the relative toxicities of substances, but they seem to agree that botulinum toxin, produced by anaerobic bacteria, is the most toxic substance known. Its LD50 is tiny – at most 1 nanogram per kilogram can kill a human. Extrapolating from its effect on mice, an intravenous dose of just 10-7g would be fatal to a 70kg person"
So there. We can end this discussion. Our beloved K1 is dangerous heavy!

Yep! And that other Web sites reviewers panned the AF on both cameras!

A-ha! now we're talking!

Fancy a nice bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled on a Tuscan olive wood fire?

It was not quite there yet... it gets a little brownier, and then it's on the table. Salt, (pepper to taste), and extra-virgin olive oil.
