Those who are steering you towards the D FA 28-105 are correct. I got one with mine and I have never regretted it. Great walk around lens and very good optically. Here is an example of what it can do. One of my personal favorite photos. FWIW, I got my first SLR 47 years ago so I have been around for awhile too.
I'm guessing Yellowstone.....what part ? Great shot.

Any of the other recommended lenses and the FA 77 Ltd. Just a miracle of older glass.

While I don’t have the 28-105, I would probably start with it, I’ve seen some amazing photos with it.

I already owned the 3 FA Limiteds (31, 43, 77) which was the main reason I bought the K-1. Normally my walk about lens is either the 31 or 43.

Yes it was taken at Yellowstone. If is part of the upper terrace of Mammoth Hot Springs.

One more vote for D FA 28-105mm. Light, sharp, WR, fast AF focusing, beautiful bokeh, affordable and useful focal range for most applications. Best buy lens for K-1.

FA43mm F1.9 Limited (Brand new or 2nd hand)
FA77mm F1.8 Limited (Brand new or 2nd hand)

When I got my K-1, I had the DA 35 2.4, the 40XS, two 50s, a 70 macro, a 90 macro, an FA 35-80 that turned out to be much better than expected, an FAJ 18-35, the DA*60250 and 200 2.8, and my Tamron SP AF 300 2.8. I held out for a while in protest over the 28-105 not being a 24 to 105, but, I really wasn't happy with the camera until I got my 28-105. That's when everything started working.

If you were to own one travel/carry-around lens for the K-1, and you were not planning on paying four figures, what would it be? I have always loved my prime lenses, but if there is a reasonably sharp zoom, I'm all ears. Would be good to get some feedback since I want to get some decent glass to get started with this great camera.
I don't have the K-1 yet but am planning to buy soon. The first and main walkaround prime I want is the Sigma 35 mm f/1.4 Art series lens. Now apparently this lens on the K-mount is known to scratch the K-1 body, but from what I can find the scratch looks minor, and reportedly the mount can be fixed by Sigma before first use. I haven't looked into it beyond that. I did try this lens on my Canon and it was fabulous, and since it comes in K-mount it is top of my list.

I have the K1 and the Sigma 35 mm Art. It's a good combination, though I don't use the 35 as much as I might. Perhaps that's because it's actually heavier than my standard zoom (28-105), so I only pack it for specific tasks.

A new Sigma 35 mm Art should not have the "scratch" issue. I had mine modified free of charge by Sigma to fix the problem. I think that's still available.

I found Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 SP XR Di LD A09 to be a very good all around most useful starter lens. Especially for tourism and traveling. It is fast, F2.8 through out its 28-75 focal length, light and relatively cheap, if you buy a used one in mint condition. The only minus, it is not weather resistant, but it does not cost thousands of $$$ either.

I bought the 28-105 today. When it is possible to do so, I will buy some of the other lenses suggested..........I have them all listed. When I had my Pentax 645N, I had a great collection of both MF and AF lenses. Wish I had them today.........sold them all at a fraction of what they are probably worth. I most recently owned a Canon system and sold that camera, flash and all the lenses and before that, the same with Nikon and Fuji before that. A lot of glass has come and gone from my camera bags and backpacks. Hopefully, I will like the K-1 as much as I liked the medium format Pentax. We all have an expensive hobby. I still have much of my studio equipment as well and will hold onto that.

I recommend Tamron 28-75 f2.8. Proven lens. F2.8 gives the subject isolation, useful for portait. Focus distance is short too

Could you post some image samples please? I too am considering this lens as my first K-1 lens.

Not sure what the problem is, but I had bought both the K-1 and 28-105 used from different sources. I cannot get a really clear image. Even using a stationary tabletop subject, with the camera on a tripod and using various settings, when enlarged, no images are sharp. I have seen many people in these forums using the same combo with tack-sharp images. Did I get a bad lens? Can the camera have this kind of defect? Haven't had this problem with any of my previous equipment. Any suggestions?
I don't know anyone locally with a Pentax lens (especially a prime lens) that I could try to use to test to see if it is my lens. Anyone else hear of this problem before?

The increased resolution of the K-1 demands good technique from the photographer. Any degree of misfocus due to uncalibrated autofocus will show up easily. You did not mention if you used manual or autofocus. If you used autofocus, test again using liveview and manual focus (focus peaking may help) instead. If they are good using liveview, then you should calibrate your autofocus. Also, try using shutter speeds faster than 1/200 second just in case there is some shutter shock happening. Some users of this lens have reported shutter shock at mid speeds.
