Pentax K-1 II vs K-1 autofocus test: results are in!

Our reviewer @bdery has done a fantastic job with testing the K-1 II's autofocus methodically alongside that of the K-1, with all 3 main types of drive motors and in many scenarios in both AF.C and AF.S. Check it out below!

I'm sure it is the older one, but the newest one doesn't mention any auto focus improvements, only the addition of DFA *50 support and "general stability" fixes.

Thanks for an excellent review!

I will stay with my K-1, though. It has as good an AF as I'll ever need - and then some.

It would be great to have firmware versions of both cameras in the article.

Does look like a useful improvement.

Still I think I will stick with my K-1 though.

K-1 users interested in improved AF speeds and accuracy will benefit from the upgrade to the K-1 II. A firmware upgrade.

Thanks for sharing, Adam, and thanks to bdery for the work in presenting the results. They do pose some interesting questions on the sacrifice of image detail to improve colour contrast and noise reduction.

Both cameras had the most recent firmware upgrades prior to yesterday's announcements. The two new upgrades relate specifically to the DFA 50 so should have no effect on AF. And comparisons should still stand.

It will be interesting to watch AF development as more ‘modern’ Pentax lenses are released. Will improved AF algo’s be tuned to work in conjunction with newly-designed in-lens motors and chips, so the best AF improvements are the result of synergy? If true, will that spur users to (finally) voluntarily abandon legacy lenses and build a modern Pentax system bag? Would that be good or bad for Pentax?

Will Disconfirming Pentax Reports test with modern lenses in future, or stick to film-era screwdrive?

Should be fun to watch!

Thanks bdery.

This is a great set of test reports. It is a good example of why many of us value Pentax Forums so much.

Very interesting. This fits with what I have observed in a less scientifically conducted comparison of the two models which compelled me to upgrade my K-1.

How was the focusing time measured?
