Mark's K-1 II discovery thread

I'm seeing how far I get without reading the manual. (As you do.)

First impressions:
  • This machine is solidly built. It feels even more robust than the K-5.
  • These dials and buttons feel solid, but with a lovely smooth motion. Like something well engineered with fine tolerences.
  • It's smaller than I thought. It really is not much bigger than the K-5. I think I'll need to get a battery grip for it, as I did for the K-5.
  • Took my first shots with it this morning. The shutter sounds glorious. In the K-5 it's noisier and more of a jarring sound. This just sounds smooth and controlled.
  • Man oh man, this thing focusses fast.
  • The viewfinder is sublime. Large, very clear, super easy to read the displays.
  • Under the Mode Dial, there's this neat little "lock-unlock" slide. Turns out, you can slide that to one side and it removes the need to push the centre button to rotate the Mode Dial. The Mode Dial still has a nice smooth click function from one setting to the next, but you need not depress the centre button when the 'lock' is unlocked.

I'll add to this list as I find out more stuff.

Put the O-ME53 on the K-1 and the viewfinder will blow your mind.

I'm using my K5 whilst my K1 is being upgrade to the mark II and have to say I'm missing the K1. The K5 is good - but lacks the refinement of the K1.
I've noticed the hesitant AF (and fewer AF points), the mass, the LCD viewfinder resolution, the button placement as big differences.

I'm looking forward to the upgrade - after hesitating with the many naysayers.

Enjoy your new K1-II - hope to join you in that world soon

Yes, I suspect so. Aaarghh. Would it not be nice if the same grip worked on K-5, K-3 and K-1!

Great, now I have to buy one and test. I have too much GAS! But found one on Amazon new from Japan for $21.78. Take awhile to get here but I can survive until then.

Thank you for the recommendation! I saw one in action on the K-3, but didn't get to use it much. Do you get the same effect on FF? Do you find you're still able to enjoy the larger viewfinder when it's magnified? I might have to pick one up...

For manual focus, bigger is better IMHO. It does spread the light over a bigger area though, but most of my glass is pretty fast so that's not much of an issue.

Congrats on your new K1 ll.

I have large hands and the bodies on my K1,K5 and K10D were too small for my XL hands. I find the grip on the K-1 works well for me. More surface areas for me to grab onto.

. I also carry an extra charged battery in the grip, but ensure that I specify body battery, rather than use the default battery selection setting on the menu and end up with both batteries running out at the same time. Voice of experience.

I also have a K5 (with battery grip) and just take one charger for both cameras when I'm on a trip. I checked both K5 and K1 manuals and found out they use the same batteries and charger.

Ahhh...you're going to have fun...

Like you, I have larger hands Les. So, a battery grip is certainly going to be my next investment. Nice thing is, I have quite a few spare batteries already!
