Help requested for K-1 video

I have a case in which I need forum help from some experienced K-1 video users.

I’ve run into a need to shoot an interview video using my K-1 and although I’ve done video before, I’ve never used the K-1, defaulting to a camcorder for that. This time, I need more professional audio so would like to use a wireless lavalier mic and a receiver plugged into the K-1 (split to both channels for mono sound - my camcorder doesn’t provide for wired audio inputs). I also desire 16:9 HD video though no need for UHD. No fancy zooms or focus tracking is anticipated.

Two questions (more like three): 1) what’s a good low cost wireless lav microphone set that can be used with the K-1? 2) What is a reasonable editing software (low cost or freeware) that can be used to edit separate cuts (once transferred from SD card to hard-drive) into a singular presentation and 3) output that to a structure which can be burned to a DVD and played on any DVD player? If I can get an mp4 file, I have software than can add a menu and output a TS_VIDEO folder.

My reasons for keeping it simple are that it won’t happen that often although I would like to produce a reasonably high video/audio quality end product which will be used for a big screen (literally - not big as in major motion picture) presentation

Thanks.

Bear in mind that high quality audio results can also be achieved by recording the audio separately without wireless, and and then substitute in that audio in during post production. A small dedicated recorder in a pocket with a wired lav can produce excellent results at a much lower cost than a wireless rig. The audio circuitry in the K-1 is good but not spectacular, so recording separately may actually produce better results.

I recently shot this video for my band.

Used two K-1's one K-01, a 6D + couple of go-pros and even some cell phone footage.

An older copy of Sony Movie Studio (12-14) is quite cheap and powerful. the suite comes with a DVD burning package.

I'd recommend hiring the Sennheiser wireless Lav kit. If you are doing this very seldom it doesn't make sense to buy. If you find a cheap rental place it can be very cheap, a few dollars for a day. I'm also not sure if there is a 'good low cost wireless lav set'.... low cost ones that are good are normally wired.

I'd also recommend recording the sound in an external recorder like the zoom H1 or H4 (the simplest you can find). Make sure that you or an assistant is listening to the audio continuously while you are recording. Recording into the camera can also work but make sure you have already mastered the input levels and you know the right setting.

Just to mention in case you don't know, the one big pitfall of lav mics is that they can rustle on the clothes during the interview. There are youtube videos that give tips on how to tape the mic to avoid this.

Thank's folks for the replies. I don't have an assistant or a place to rent Sennheiser equipment, so have to wing it. I was looking into a MOVO WMIC 80 but they have poor reviews????

This is a one time (hope) request so I don't want to invest that much though a $200 MOVO might fit if I could use it again in the future. I'm pretty aware of levels and issues like clothing noise and can handle those if they cause problems. I really don't want to go the separate audio route and the recombining it requires downstream in post - would like a finished product once clips are edited and transferred to a disc.

My main issues right now are a recommendation for a low cost wireless and file handling from the K-1. Thanks again.

"low cost wireless" is probably a contradiction in terms. They don't build low cost wireless lav mics that work well as far as I know. These aren't items that you want to buy to use a handful of times, they're specialist items and need to have a decent amount of use to get your ROI.

Ok. At this point I have secured a Sennheiser G3 transmitter/receiver pair with a lapel mic (that package came in at under $200Us with some qualifications I won't get into here). My K-1 audio output was too wimpy to drive my Sony headphones (used for monitoring and playback reviewing) so I also have a small headphone amplifier coming to address that issue.

I think that covers the audio needs but can one of you folks with K-1 experience help me with the file handling end of my question? Once I have the video/audio file on my SD card, what do I need to edit several clips together into one and come up with an mp4 file?

Appreciate the advice.

I can't really help with any of your questions but as for software you might try this; Download Free Video Editor: best software for video editing.

I downloaded it because I was going to try and figure out video editing. From what little bit I played with it, it seems it would do about anything you would need it to do. Don't hold me to that because I played with it for around an hour and haven't touched it sense.

Thanks for that referral bigdavephoto - I'll check it out. I have discovered that I can run a single clip through AVStoDVD and it will put in into a DVD writable format (VIDEO_TS folder structure with menu) but I don't have a solution for joining multiple clips right out of the K-1. I can also go with a Blu-Ray solution since I have a BD writer. In either case, I would like to keep as much picture quality (HD) as possible.

Thanks jbondo. I will check that out as well. Right now, for the limited amount of editing I intend to do, the video editor suggested by bigdavephoto is appealing. I think I'll give that a spin first and see what it looks like. I'm an Adobe Premiere user from some time back (SD 720x480 days) so I'm also looking at Adobe Premiere Elements, but again, due to the simple requirements of this project and the fact that it's a one time deal (right now anyway), I think I'll go cheap.

Audio-wise, a lapel mic with the Sennheiser transmitter/portable-receiver pair looks to be very workable with the K-1. I need to build a mono to stereo adapter cable so I can feed the mono audio to both K-1 stereo inputs with just a simple cable mod, and I should be in good shape on that end. I understand the K-1 uses a 48kHz sampling rate, so for voice, that should be more than adequate.

I'll let everyone know how I finally come out.

Thanks again for all the input - any other suggestions are appreciated.

You can normally use Adobe products for 1 month free as an intro offer... So it would cost you nothing if available.
