A sling strap is better, Dlh. Stronger for bearing a DSLR and lens rather than a tiny point and shoot.

Distributes weight across the body, frees both hands, etc.

good points, but I found the weight around my neck intolerable (when using the "hands free" option), and what I really need is not a carrying option (I got a big bag to carry the stuff in, and that has a strap), but something to prevent inadvertent crashing to the ground and hit-and-grab theft. A security measure, rather than a carry-convenience.

Not a neck strap, Dlh, a sling strap. It goes across your shoulders and back, not your neck, and the camera is resting against the back of your hip so you can walk freely.

It cannot crash to the ground, nor can it be grabbed by a thief running past like a camera on a wrist strap or being held by its grip.
