It is pretty obvious if you think about it. Even with multiple AF points the camera still only focuses at one distance. The convenience of multiple points is to do away with the camera refocusing when you move from focusing on an off centre point to compose the image. That is not an issue with a manual focus lens.

The center-focus-point for manual lenses goes back to the Pentax AF film cameras; the limitation may have been instituted then for lens sales reasons, and just kept on unchanged ever since. (Or maybe there were technical reasons at the time which may not be limited by capabilities now.)
