I'd rather carry an ultra wide angle lens instead of a pistol. You can get more shots with it before needing to reload.
This made me nearly do a spit take. Lol.

I need to lug a K-1 with zoom and strobe around new york city for a week or so.

Any recommendations on a bag or pack or other device?
...
28-105 f4 lens; Af-360FGZ strobe; small bottle of rye whiskey; 9mm semi-automatic and two handrolls.
Take your gear into your closest photography equipment retail establishment to look for a bag or backpack in which your gear comfortably fits. If a backpack, it is good to try it on with your gear loaded in it to test for balance, fit to your body and personal comfort.

Do you have a NYC concealed carry permit? NYC Firearms Licensing

Did I forget anything?
Spare batteries and charger for camera and flash. Lens tissue and bulb style blower. Aspirin.

Swap the rye for a flask of Laphroaig and everything will fall into place.
Don't you mean fall all over the place? Hic.

To travel light and stay warm, I highly recommend swapping out the 9mm for a .380 Walter PPK - it’s the pistol version of a Pentax KP with HD DA 40 Ltd. Swap the rye for a flask of Laphroaig and everything will fall into place.
That is a nice little workhorse of a gun.
Nothing wrong with a good rye.

Without getting into politics I will say this: it appears to still be the case that carrying a gun in NYC requires a special permit and open carry is not considered to be ok. Open carry by a permit holder can result in permit revocation based on sites I've read on the topic...

Politics aside, sort of - I wonder if the criminal element with ill intention toward a good citizen / photographer will obey the gun laws or get a gun permit to carry in NY?

I've never used the flipside but those look like awesome choices.

I don't have either of those models, but I agree with you that they look like good choices for carrying equipment, and from experience with LowePro, they make nice, well made packs/bags. Like I said, I have the Flipside 400AW and it is really nice for travel, being that it fits under the seat in front of me on most flights if I bring it with me. It carries quite a bit also.

Lowe Pro Holster

I use this one.

Toploader Pro 70 AW II | Lowepro

Holster bags are much underrated but give fast access and sit close to the body. Vintage Tamrac 515, 517 and 519 (made in USA) are my favorites. They are softer and hug the body, so you can move and climb. I even did a trailrun when I had to flee a thunderstorm. The Lowepro is not as bodyhugging as the Tamracs but gives space for a flash and has a nice topcompartment. It even carries my P645.

For the K1 (and 645) I use bags with metal hardware.

BTW as a bagoholic I buy all my bags barely used for bargain prices.
