How to Carry It?

I need to lug a K-1 with zoom and strobe around new york city for a week or so.

Any recommendations on a bag or pack or other device?

Which "strobe"?

Is the semi-automatic 9mm an A series K-mount lens? I haven't heard of one....

Seriously though, I would suggest the K-1, 28-105 and flash be carried over the shoulder, and the 9mm carried on the hip.
This time of year New York is getting chilly, so I'd carry the whiskey in a metal flask in an internal left breast pocket of your jacket. Just in case.

I don't know that NYC actually permits open carry. Out here in Arizona, you see it every now and then - but we're out here in the wild wild west.

I did the same often but only in Tokyo and not New York. So I have no idea if it will work in other places. :-)

I use this bag:

National Geographic Earth Explorer camera messenger M | NG 2476

good: The carrying strap is big and long. It is possible to carry the bag very deep, this is good for your back.

bad: The bag needed some serious modifikation done by my mother and her sewing machine. (installing velcro fastener)

To travel light and stay warm, I highly recommend swapping out the 9mm for a .380 Walter PPK - itís the pistol version of a Pentax KP with HD DA 40 Ltd. Swap the rye for a flask of Laphroaig and everything will fall into place.

I thought it was against the law to have a gun in NY? Did they change that law?

You can always go to B&H. Then you can try before you buy.

Use extreme caution. B&H is the proverbial candy store. You may come out with a whole new kit.

Without getting into politics I will say this: it appears to still be the case that carrying a gun in NYC requires a special permit and open carry is not considered to be ok. Open carry by a permit holder can result in permit revocation based on sites I've read on the topic.

My assumption is that as this is a camera forum, the op already knows what is required for the gun legally and has questions for us mainly about size and utility of the bag options. I'm not certain the gun example given was intended for us to take into account anything other than space requirements. However, "9mm semi auto" isn't very clear on size as these range from a large double stack Browning to something like a Kahr CM9. Sufficient variation exists that I'm unclear how much extra space is needed.

Other than the gun (see my comments about carry in NYC) is agree. But if a small bag is desired I'm partial to sling bags.

I actually was trying to make a joke, which failed badly. Sorry, on to other things now.

I don't think Pentax made a 28-105mm f/4 lens. Are you referring to the recently release D-FA 28-105mm f/3.5-5.6? That camera and lens combo isn't too heavy. Are you using a battery grip?

The flash isn't super huge either, I think.

I use a plain, simple Lowepro 160 with two compartments. A large one holds the camera and a small narrow holds the flash. There's enough pockets inside and outside for batteries, extra cards, etc.

I recommend you drink the bottle of whiskey ASAP to reduce the amount of weight you carry. Never mind the immediate effect.

I'd rather carry an ultra wide angle lens instead of a pistol. You can get more shots with it before needing to reload.
